Bottom Flagstick Ferrules Cancel The title field is required!

   A very simple question, what is the best way to replace the bottom ferrule on a flag stick? Do you apply heat to get the old one off or ????? Have done several tops but never replaced the bottom.

   In the past I have taken a chop saw to remove the old one at the spot it meets the stick. Used a 2 part epoxy to install the new one, let dry overnight and ready to go.
   
   You do lose a small amount of length, but it is very minimal. Have done this twice on my current set, now replacing the sticks with new management wanting a different color.

   I worked at a golf course where the pro had the driving range. His "volunteers" were breaking off the flag sticks marking yardage on a daily basis. I told the golf crew to just drill out the ferrules and glue them back on the flag sticks. The flag sticks were 18" tall when the pro realized what we were doing.

   We use a heat gun. Heat only the ferrule,pointing away from the body, as the stick will melt. Be careful when doing this, as the ferrule will shoot off rocket fast. Try using a trash can to shoot it into. I did this last year and evened up all of our sticks.

   I just cut the pole at the top of the old ferrule and glue on the new one with epoxy.

   I tried this as well with the fat sticks (1" diameter), cutting the ferrule off and gluing a new one on. First, I wasn't any good at re-gluing new ferrules on because when we would cut a straight cup the flag stick was crooked. We even set up a gig to hold the stick and ferrule in place not much luck. Second, I got to thinking about height of flag stick in relation to the cup and so I sent a message to the USGA about the issue. They recommend that the flag stick be at least 7 feet in height and that the diameter be not greater than 3/4" from a point 3" above the ground to the bottom of the hole. So you can replace ferrules for a few years but for guys that are using the fat-sticks you have to watch the length of the bottom of the flag stick. Just some more food for the brain.
