Ok, seems I have exhausted all of my resources except for here. I have 2007 JD 2500E (hybrid of course). I am having a problem that the JD people don't seem to know about. While mowing greens something happens and the motor shears off the geared spindle on the reel. I have swapped motors (as dealer recommended) and it still happens. I was wondering if it might be the back-lap switch shorting or if the R&R reels I am using are too weak to hold up to the electric motors. Sad thing is it is one of my best mowers, or at least was. Please help if you can. I would like to save this one. Thanks in advance.

Is it the same unit every time even when you swapped motors?

I had the same situation several years ago. Lost 2 reels. John Deere regional service manager said they found that the key-way for the gear in the electric motor could be worn allowing slight slippage during initial reel start-up. The result of the slip then catch situation puts pressure on the splines and they have seen 3 or 4 occasions where the end of the reel sheared off. The solution is to use hi-strength Loc-Tite product to lock the key way, key and gear to the shaft. Allow the product to fully dry before use. Be aware that with this product, the only way remove the gear in the future is to apply heat to it to re-liquify the Loc-Tite. Be sure that all bearings are in good shape as replacement will require a bit more effort. i have not had any more issues after applying this solution to all of my 2500E motors(6).

Thanks Steve for the solution. That is a lifesaver.

Everything mentioned above is true. They also want you to put grease in the spline's and cavity, as this will help remove some of the play/slamming at startup. I noticed some wear on the spline's after we had removed units several times for grinding and we started adding grease to the spline cavity each time they were removed and now we don't see any issues.
