My course is in the process of growing in new bentgrass greens (Dominant Plus). They were seeded in October and have developed a good stand though they still have a long way to go before play begins.
To help promote continued growth through the winter months, a number of the greens were covered using permeable greens covers. (Not all of the greens were covered since the course got the covers for free from another project and we did not have enough.) Yesterday we took the covers off the greens and the difference in growth is shocking compared to those that were not covered. The root growth difference is dramatic with the covered greens having 2" depth while the uncovered greens only have about 1" to 1.25" depth.
This background leads to my question concerning if any of you have used greens covers throughout the winter months to promote deeper root depth and a better turf start for the spring? This is obviously dependent on the facilities play habits, but it seems that those places that tend to be covered with snow for extended periods could benefit from this sort of approach, as long as good snow mold control was maintained.
I would love to hear about any experiences you have had in this regard. You can see pictures of the greens at my course at my website http://chrissorrell.com .

I think the covers may be a one trick pony applicable mostly on a grow in as far as root growth goes. I haven't really seen any evidence to increased root growth after establishment using covers. Spring root growth may be accelerated by a few weeks but once the covers are removed, the greens will equalize in both root growth and colour

On established greens the only benefit to cover that I have seen is the earlier growth - nearly 3 to 4 weeks earlier. Soil temps were only a few degrees warmer however it prevented extreme swings from high to low.

    Chris,

I as well regrassed our greens in the fall of 2011 and we covered for winter. The mild temperatures last winter in combination of the covers kept the plant active to root growth as well as top growth. We actually pulled off on Feb 1 of 2012 to mow as the top growth and lateral growth was becoming matted. I won't ever cover again. As stated I feel they are a 1 trick pony for grow in but then if continued use is done I think you create an opportunity at least in our region for Poa to become more prominent. The club that I'm at used to cover the greens each year and had good success but also had some negative affects from freeze/thaw cycles. Bents these days can handle cooler temperatures as well as ice, if anything create a cover by heavy topdressing; thats what we do now. Best of luck with the continued grow in.
