Our workman has not been running very good the past week so I had the crew put it on the lift and change the oil. They told me the old oil smelled like gas what could be causing this?

Not sure as to which model you have. on some occasions piston rings can be worn enough to allow flow by. You can check this by doing a pressure test on the cylinder. Some times also the carburetor can have some debris in it to where the float sticks and so the fuel continues to flow into the cylinder. Just a couple of things to look at.
    Good luck

I am with Kevin here on the float sticking on the carburetor. Has happened few times with golf carts around here.

I have 2 Workman 2100s that I had the same issue with. I was able to rebuild one of them, but the other one I had to replace because where the float attached to the carburetor had worn out and even after rebuild, the float valve never would seat right and allowed fuel to continuously flow. I still have issues with my Workmans backfiring after going down a hill, but no more fuel in the oil.

Same with a Toro 648 for the last few years as it sat in the shop between monthly solid tining. Figured it was the float so last fall we added some Seafoam to the fuel tank. It helped but didn't fully solve the problem.

Not familiar with the fuel set up on the Toro's ...but if you have a vacuum or pulse type fuel pump on the vehicle, there is a possibility of the diaphragm being bad in the pump.... had that happen on a few golf carts here.
