Appears to me to be some sort of pressure regulator. What is it?

Looks very similar to our drinking water filtration system

Only one way to be sure. Take it apart. It resembles a miniature version of a filter I used to have

Looks like a self cleaning filter. The small valve at the front with the pink collar is a manual bypass for a flush.

Unfortunately I can't turn this one into a quick profit. It's not mine, but a photo from a colleague up the street. He's not sure what it is either. But, thanks to this help, I think I'll tell him to take it apart and see what's inside!

Yeah, that's why I thought it was a trick question.

What is it connected to? might give us a better idea of what it could be. If it is hooked up to a swimming pool it could be some sort of clorine injector. If hooked up to drinking water, a filter, hooked up to the irrigation system, who knows.

    Andy,

It looks like an Amiad... resembles the larger unit that was on my pump station when I got here...

Take a look on Google images...

Yep, that's exactly it. Thanks for the lead. Google images found it right away.

Next questions....it appears clogged and not letting any water through. How would one go about making it dump?

Found a pencil sized hole in my green this morning, and then this guy. Have never seen one before, any takers on what the hell it is? I am at a loss. His buddies are still out there, and they will all be meeting Mr Insecticide in the morning. The lines are on regular legal notebook paper.

Well, turns out it is a Predatory Tiger Beetle larvae. So I got that going for me, which is nice.
