We have been blessed by our course architect to have the brown rail road ties installed on our course. I assume they looked great 30 years ago, but today not so much. We are hosting a large event this fall and we are thinking of "painting" the railroad ties. They are simply a wall in a hazard so no one will be walking on them or really getting to close to them. I was thinking creosoate. But i am not sure where to purchase and how to apply it. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Down here in horse country, the majority of the fences that surround horse pastures were originally installed with Creosote as a treatment. Nowadays, most everybody uses pressure treated boards and paint them black. That being said, lots of the creosote boards that remain are typically repainted with a black oil based paint that is sprayed on. I would think this method would provide years of good results on your railroad ties as well.

As for prep, I'd pressure wash first, allow to dry for a few days, then paint. I would not use a primer.

Any time I need paint for anything I call US Specialty Coatings. Call their 1-800-278-7473. Talk to Andy, EXT 105. Tell him what you are doing and he will send you the correct product. I have used their rail road tie product (and every other paint or coating product I need) before and it works great. Here is the link the specific page: http://www.usspecialtycoatings.com/Products/Golf-Course-Paint.aspx There is a huge lumber company in Montevallo, AL that does nothing but creosote. At Old Overton we would have them do special sizes for bridges. Timber is pressure treated with creosote. We would get 16"x16" and the creosote penetrated in about 4 inches. Any, call Andy and he will get you fixed up.
