I took another road trip up to Washington late last week and once again stopped by some wineries in the Willamette Valley near the little towns of Dundee and Newberg Oregon. Aside from Domaine Serene and Domaine Droughain which are always great, I located a smaller winery called Ayub. I had read about this winery developing 95 to 97 point Pinot Noirs so I made an appointment to go tasting. It turned out, I went to the owners house! He is relatively small by most vineyard standards but he is truly the master of the area. Ayub is not currently on the market and it can only be purchased through visits or joining his wine club. I sample a Pinot from 2012 and a 2013 that had been bottled only 3 weeks ago. It was beyond incredible even prior to aging. He also developed a Chardonnay that was possibly the best I can remember tasting. He also makes a blend that nobody else has attempted and has actually been called crazy for blending the Pinot and Gamay grapes. Also incredible. His name is Mo so he named that one MOJO. His wines range from $65 to $75 per bottle so if you ever want to experience wine heaven, go in with a couple of people and purchase it by the case. You will be very pleased. Oregon growers are making some of the best Pinot Noirs in the world and are now doing quite well with Syrah and Chardonnay along with Pinot Gris. Good by seed growing areas and hello vineyards. The word is out and big time growers are purchasing land for grapes.

    Hi Sandy,

You may already have done the tour of the back-of-the-house at Bern's Steakhouse in Tampa. If you have not it is worth the one hour trip over there to experience this restaurant. You may still be able to have a helicopter take you and your over from Orlando. It is well worth the experience.

Sandy, Do you need our addresses to ship us our wine?? Heading down towards Santa Ynez/Solvang this coming weekend so I think we'll probably be sampling a few places...it's either that or hang out at the casino. Lots of nice wineries in that area and along the road heading down so we always find something new we like. Good time of year to visit the wineries as well.

    Gary,
I miss living on the golf course in Gilroy. It was nice to have 5 or 6 wineries down the street from the house. Fortino's and Solis Wineries were my favorite in that area. Hope all is good in Beautiful Northern California.

Just to clarify, I did spell the winery wrong. It is Ayoub. Corey, I don't smoke, I don't spend money on any other alcohol so I have to have something that qualifies as a hobby. I do tend to get a little carried away and probably have more money in wine around the house than some of my friends have in savings. I am currently in the market for a good 300 bottle wine refrigerator if by chance anyone knows a good source.

I was involved with restaurant management for a while, unfortunately. I don't know about 300 bottle refrigerators but it seems to me that you can get professional, high capacity refrigeration for extremely reasonable pricing if noise is not an issue.

Sandy can keep his $75 dollar bottles of wine. With my muni super budget, I prefer coors light cut with two to three fingers of sprite. Very refreshing, especially when the Santa Ana's are blowing. Now that sprite has been scientifically proven to reduce hangover effects, well it's cheap and a no brainer.

Scott, you have hit on the big issue and that is noise. My 64 bottle wine refrigerator is starting to make a racket. I hope I can find one that is reasonable with the noise factor.

i got a pretty good wine inventory but with the amount we drink it rotates regularly. No need for a cooler. Living on the Stockton-Lodi border we have around fifty winery's within ten miles. Keep the max at < $25.00 Favorite though is Concannon Petire Sarah. Nightly is Cupcake Red Velvet at $9.00 and unbeatable at that price. One bottle left of '70 Ingelnook Cab. Susi saving it for my Wake.

Insulating the noise and outward appearance appears to be the expensive part. A motor and compressor mounted on an insulated box is not that big of a deal cost-wise. If you can put the thing in a garage or cellar, the cheap ones are huge, very efficient, easy to repair and last forever.

    Corey,

Sounds like our house....not a lot of wine "aging" around here either as we too keep the stock "rotating" on a regular basis. If it's older than 2008 it must have just been missed!!!!!

    Corey,

We've known each other for a long time, so can you ask Susi to put me on the wake list?

My favorite wine is from Mexico. Had it the first time I met my wifes relatives from Guadalajara, Mexico. My father-in-laws brother has 3 - 55 gallon oak barrels full of Tequila from Don Julio. Every meal we had included a wine glass of this delicious Tequila. It was my first time sipping tequila like wine. Actually enjoyed it this way.

Check out Wine Enthusiast's website. I just purchased the N'Finity Pro 166 Dual Zone wine refrigerator. It will hold up to 166 bottles and has an upper and lower cooling zone and has virtually no vibration and is extremely quite. Wine Enthusiast also sells larger N'Finity Pro units as well as EuroCave's. Lots to choose from.

I will have to check out Ayoub wines. If you are big into Pinot's you should try to find some from Aubert and La Rue. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks Zach, I will check it out. I will definitely look for the two Pinot's you mentioned. Ayoub also makes an incredible Chardonnay, not something you think about first when you consider Oregon's climate.
