It really depends on the type of verticut units you have and how agressive you would like to be with them. Personally I use verticut units mostly to stand grass up as opposed to removing thatch so I generally set them at ground level or perfectly even with the rollers. This is easy to do if you have a flat surface. Just put the unit on the surface and adjust the blades until they just touch the surface. If you want to be more agressive and start removing some thatch I would recommend getting a guage. You can get guages specifically for verticut units. R&R products has what they call a verti-guage for about 200 bucks that will let you set them up to any depth. Most things I have read say for thatch removal you should be anywhere between 2-12 millimeters below the surface.
