Young People aren't so bad Cancel The title field is required!

   I know we sometimes don't treat our young people with great respect, but after spending 2 days on the road and 2 days in Dayton with 30 great kids, I don't think we have anything to really worry about, unless it is us that let them down.
   
   We drove out to Dayton OH for the 2012 World Drumline Championships. 6000 kids and young adults converged on the city for the contest. (I don't think those numbers included the color guard kids from the week before, but they might)
   
   We proudly watched our Kickapoo kids perform their show 3 times in two days, (along with much practice in between), through pre-lims, semi-finals and we were lucky enough to make finals. That didn't include the practice and send off performance, plus loading on Tuesday night before the travel day on Wednesday. We unloaded and loaded the truck and bus 3 times plus unpacking yesterday when we got back. While I did help, it was the kids stepping up and doing most of the work. I did help our son Nick navigate the "Tunnel of Doom" (which is the ramp from the parking lot down to the arena floor and back up 3 times, boy do I need to get in shape) with his synthesiser cart.
   
   The best part was getting a high five from the boy after our last time up. We also would get cheers from the group waiting to go down the tunnel for us making it back up. We would also hear the good luck from groups that had finished, while we were waiting to go on. I was even thanked when I helped another group fold up their mat as they struggled to fold it in the parking lot when the wind was really blowing. The sad thing was watching the emotion hit our nine seniors, we wish them the best of luck and thank them for taking our freshman in as part of their group. I do look forward to three more years of this fun.
   
   Really I don't think we have much to worry about.

   It's not the ones that are in high school band, debate, dance, theater, cross country, volleyball, and for the most part, baseball that I'm worried about. You know, the activities that the coach doesn't have to worry about losing players due to grades. Not too worried about those kids.

   Pete, you are correct, but the thing to worry about is that those programs get cut to help with budgets, since they are typically non-revenue producers, while academics are important, extra curricular activities are important too (of course our fees certainly covered much of the cost except for probably the electricity and heat used during practices.
   
   Although with the cost of tickets this past weekend, someone is making some money.

   Exactly why you charge a green fee at your golf course Mel, to make some money. The free lunch is only at the homeless shelter but in the end you and I are paying for that as well.

   You should know me David, I'm so cheap, don't I still owe you a few beers?
   
   When we look at it, I guess $42 for both days, (I guess the cost to rent out the arena isn't cheap), isn't too bad, thank goodness we made finals or we wouldn't have used our second day of the 2 day pass. Although I found out too late I got in for free since I was helping with equipment. Throw in the t-shirts, food, drinks, programs, extra mallets, hotel, fuel, (sorry Illinois no gas taxes for you. We did buy coffee and snacks, and the kids stopped there on the way home), drum line fee for instructors, buses, mat design, show design.....it does add up. But I'm guessing it's cheaper then bail and a good lawyer.

    That's part of the reason that the latch-key kids are getting in trouble. No after school activities to keep them busy and out of trouble. If you have a kid that enjoys something, no matter what it is, support it. Like you said, way cheaper then bail and a good lawyer.
