Saw a couple of Past Presidents absolutely blister a certain GCSAA department the other night on social media; could be a good time for a Past Presidents meeting! Would love to be a fly on that wall!

Sorry, but it was deleted. Was part of a discussion on a Facebook page that took an unexpected turn, don't feel like I can get specific but after 34 years of membership I was shocked at what I saw. Raises some serious leadership questions IMO.

You came here to mention it but won't get specific? What is your point then? You don't have to name names. but don't come here to say you saw something shocking then not elaborate.

    Move on, nothing to see.....

Valid point, the message is to ask questions regarding the direction of the association and hold people accountable. For instance, how has the association become better at serving us as constituents in the post Mona/O'Brien era?

    Kevin,

Holding the board accountable for what is my question? The recession, the closing of courses, regulation? Are we all missing something?

Golf and GCSAA have been in a downward spiral for the past 12 years. The high water mark of membership was in 2002 coincidentally following a 18 month $75 membership special celebrating GCSAA's 75th Anniversary. Joe O'Brian left the association in 2000 Steve Mona left in March 2008. Both of these men are are my friends and I am sure both of them would agree that GCSAA greatly benefited by the great golf boom that was coming to a close during their tenure. Era's are hard to compare, we have benefited from the good work of many employees and leaders through out the history of GCSAA. It has had its ups and downs but even these are arguable depending on ones perspective.

The Nominating Committee is looking for Board Candidates right now. I can tell you personally that the during my board tenure the election process was rigorous but the politics were doable. It takes desire, networking, patience and humility to run for the GCSAA BOD. Its best if you have been a Chapter President at one time or other in your career. The travel demands (in my opinion) are overstated. You don't have to go to everything and today our ability to meet electronically is easier. Every election I ran in was in doubt until the votes were counted and I found the process very positive win or lose.

I would wager each and every GCSAA Board Member would welcome input from members. In fact they need it. That is why they generally run everything through the committee system.

    Hi Sean,

Please notice that I did not specify whom when I said make people accountable. Honestly, I have no personal opinion on the current performance of the BOD. In the interest of full disclosure I am a 54 year old guy who was once very involved in local associations and has served on national committees and also as a voting delegate. Over the past 12 years I have gradually disassociated myself with GCSAA to the point where if there was no GCSAA tomorrow I don't think I would be particularly affected. No single reason for my disaffection but I do belong to a strong local that, for the most part, serves my needs.

During my time of service I considered myself quite passionate about the Association and always was impressed if not re-energized by visits to Lawrence as a result of the professionalism and enthusiasm of staff. This is why I found the comments I have alluded to so stunning in that they were directed to a key department within the Association. Clearly, for such spontaneous and direct comments to be made (in any forum) suggests a tangible and systemic problem that must be corrected.

Historically, this forum has been a platform for members with a sense of advocacy; therefore I made the decision to toss out a comment in an effort to renew some of the passion that has existed here in the past. Obviously, I failed miserably.

Everyone knows what has happened in the last six years, there is no need to replay that reality. However, almost every one of us has had to get more creative, innovative, efficient, and self-sustaining to survive these changes. I guess at the end of the day the obvious question becomes do we have the necessary creative energy and expertise available and are we using all of the best resources to survive and even thrive given these challenges.
