For me, this was a super analysis on a phenomenon that I thought I was being overly sensitive to.
I try to be on guard against becoming a person who complains about "kids today" because we were all those kids at some point in our lives and someone with more fragile sensibilities was offended by us to be sure - we just didn't know it or didn't care.

The worst part of that is it's almost Impossible to know where the pandering stops and genuine concern begins.

I'm more concerned with censorship as it relates to what kids/college students are allowed to read and see in public schools/universities. 'Offense' doesn't just exist as an independent entity. You have to be taught to be offended - usually that's taken care of by your parents or guardian and adjusts as you learn how to function within society or your group.
Great and important books/literature being withdrawn from a reading list merely because someone is 'triggered' by something they find offensive is unbelievable.

It's Tipper Gore all over again.

As I've said for years, being offended is highly overrated.

What we are teaching our kids in schools today is utter bull, If it offends you then lets talk about it, why does it offend you let me hear your side. No we just censor what is being said by telling them this might trigger some emotional thoughts in you and if it offends you let me know and I won't do it. Come on people smell the roses life isn't a walk through the garden, things will be said that offend you, consider the source was it meant hurtful or is it just an ideology of yours that causes you to be offended.

I find it offensive that everyone is so damn sensitive to each and every word that comes out of my mouth, or the way I say it. I spend a lot of my time trying not to offend people with my speech that the point is lost most of the time. There are certain words that I try to refrain from using, but on a whole I speak what's on my mind. Guess this is why I do what I do and don't teach, cause I would lose my job for sure.

The tides seem to have turned for those who are offended. The "back in my day" elders have historically been the group that was offended by the next generation; I.e., Elvis, The Beatles, and so on. Today it is the younger generation who is offended by the traditional norms of society. I certainly understand those norms evolve over time, however, academia is allowing the generation-Xers and the millennials to pave the discussion points and ultimately decide the dos and don'ts of today rather than teaching the realities of life. We have now cultivated a weak minded generation that will, at some point in the not so distant future, guide the business and government of tomorrow. Rebellions are normal from one generation to the next. It will be interesting to see if a hard-liner generation will follow.

It all started about the time every kid got a trophy just for being on the soccer team, and that kid's baby brother or sister got a "Baby on Board" sign in the car in their honor. Soon they'll be running the country.

    But that's their parents' fault.

There is nothing wrong with people telling us something we say or do offends them. Thats real progress.

Worry about the people who don't tell you, they are working and living in a parallel society. Rather than join you they will simply exploit you or be exploited by you. They don't care for your social/moral rules and are making no effort to change them because they don't live by them, only tolerate them. One day when nobody is paying particular attention one flips the other, and before you know it, well you're living in their world.

I hope I did not offend anyone! Ha Ha
