    Those of You Born
    1930 - 1979
At the end of this Email is a quote of the month by Jay Leno.. If you don't read anything else, Please Read what he Said.
Very well stated, Mr. Leno. TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
    1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!

First, we survived being born to mothers
Who smoked and/or drank while they were
    Pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing,
Tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles,
Locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode
Our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

    As infants & children,
We would ride in cars with no car seats,
No booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.

Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day
    Was always a special treat.

    We drank water
From the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends,
From one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon.
We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar.
    And, we weren't overweight.
    WHY?

    Because we were
    Always outside playing...that's why !

We would leave home in the morning and play all day,
As long as we were back when the
    Street lights came on.

    No one was able
To reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps
And then ride them down the hill, only to find out
We forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes
a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes.
There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable,
No video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's,
No cell phones, No personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS
And we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth
And there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt,
And the worms did not live in us
    Forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and,
Although we were told it would happen,
We did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and
Knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just
Walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn to deal
    With disappointment.
    Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law
    Was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best
Risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

    The past 50 years
Have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility,
and we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them?
CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others
who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the
lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives
    for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know
how brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house
    with scissors, doesn't it ?

    The quote of the
    month is by Jay Leno:
"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control,
    mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms
tearing up the country from one end to another,
and with the threat of swine flu
    and terrorist attacks.
Are we sure this is a good time
to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'

For those that prefer to think that God is not watching over us.. ..go ahead and delete this.

    For the rest of
    us...pass this on.
    A Small Prayer!

God determines who walks into your life....it's up to you to decide who you let walk away, who you let stay, and who you refuse to let go.

When there is nothing left but God, that is when you find out that God is all you need.
    Father,
God bless my friend in whatever it is that You know they may need this day!
And may their life be full of your peace, prosperity, and power
as he/she seeks to have a closer relationship with you.
    Amen.

For fun, we would throw snow balls at each other in the winter and clods of soil, "dirt bombs", in the summer. I still refuse to wear a bike helmet.

One of the best summertime games was the BB gun war. The only rule was you couldn't pump more than 5 times. We did anyways. My best friend from elementary school still has a BB lodged in his hand right next to his knuckle. Cool conversation piece but will gross you out the first time you see it.

I remember going out on the thin ice on ponds and irrigation ditches and seeing how far it would bend before breaking. :o

Also jumping my Kmart stingray banana seat bike over the five foot wide, ten foot deep trench at the construction site, of course sans helmet.....this wasn't far from where the alleged Chester the Molester hung out, though I never had the ummm..... privilege of meeting him. Of course this was before Tuffy stole the beauty....bastard, the bike, not Chester.

I remember lying in the back of the ranch wagon on sticky plastic mats through miles of dirt roads with my dad driving who still thinks he's the second coming of Mario Andretti.

Actually looking back, I think he was trying to kill me....

We were really hard core. We actually played dodge ball without any protection. Bike helmets? What were they, never heard of them. Garden hose drinking was routine. We actually played pick up games of all three major sports without anyone organizing them. Rode bikes 8 miles out to the beach and back daily during the summer just to go surfing for several hours. When we got older, heaven forbid, we hitchhiked to the beach and our parents even knew about it. If a kid 12 years old today even thought of riding his bike to the beach or especially hitchhiking, the parents would be mortified at the thought. How did I ever grow up in such a dangerous environment? Games without adults supervising, drinking out of hoses, long bike rides, surfing with no adult supervision, hitchhiking, you would have to think that I would have grown up to be a criminal! Kids have no idea of what they are missing compared to our childhood adventures. I must admit, I would be the first parent terrified about the hitchhiking idea in today's world.

Did my share of hitchhiking , although I was college age or slightly older.
We also had BB gun wars but added bottle rockets to the arsenal when available.
Mopeds, go karts and mini bikes all over neighborhood streets. Hide and seek/ghost in the grave yard and/ or kick the can Friday and Saturday nights during summer. Only boundary was you could not leave our neighborhood (250 houses) or you could not jump a fence. We would start as soon as it was dark and we were allowed to play until at least 10:00pm. Must of been 12-15 kids every night.

Mud pies reminded of when I was around 4 and stepped on a nail and ran it thru my bare foot. Mom set me by the kitchen sink washed my foot poured iodine on it and pulled the nail out. Then more iodine and mercurochrome bandaged and that was it. At the time tramatic but in rural Iowa that was it. Now mercurochrome is no longer sold cuz of mercury and my mother would probably be jailed for child abuse and neglect. Still rather be bare foot most of the time.

I went to a Red Lobster the other day. They had some sort of "safe" raw oysters with a trademarked name. They looked beautiful and the taste was not horrible, but it was not like raw oysters. I would not order them again. I sure hope they do not make safety features mandatory for raw oysters. As a kid I used to park my jon boat along sea walls and eat them right off the wall. I may have to buy another jon boat.

I know what you're sayin' Scotty, when I was young we used to ride our bikes to the marsh and eat poutine right out of the fields raw. No pasteurization, no preservatives. Wholesome goodness. The prepared stuff at Tim Hortons' just doesn't measure up

When i was growing up, I had to tend to the cows in the morning, which usually meant a daily trip in the silo to shovel out some ground corn. Then jump on the tractor and go chop some fresh hay to put in the pasture for them. Then I would bail hay all day. Then after dinner, it was cleaning out the barn and feeding the cows again. Nowadays, they dont want kids working on the farm. Damn govt.

    Dennis,

While I'll agree with a lot of what your saying, if I remember correctly the law was not going to allow kids to work on others farms, they could still work on their own. Heck if you have a kid that will work on a farm I would say let him, but the statistics of injuries and deaths were sobering and probably the reason it was brought up.

The only reason that it even came up is because unions want to get into those jobs. It was going to be a pay back for union support. They simply misjudged the fire storm that hit them. If he is elected, as a lame duck, it is liable to come up again and go through this time. I fear we may see many other things forced on America if he wins. He is willing to concede too much to the United Nations including various forms of aid we cannot afford.

Sandy are you talking about farm jobs? Really the union was wanting to get into farming? Heck we have to get migrant workers to pick a ton of our crops, what would the unions gain?

Also what are you talking about with the United Nations and what is being conceded to them?

I'm afraid this thread has just been hi-jacked?

I did everyone of those things as a kid growing up as Jay Leno mentioned. To this day Gerald Williams a boyhood friend and high school classmate and teammate has noticeable dent in his top lip from a BB I put there during a BB gun war in ......guessing 1961 or 1962 ish...........bled like hell, stopped the bleeding and went back at it. And like Steve I ride a bike 3-4 days a week and do not wear a helmet either....sunglasses, the cap turned backwards. Hell did not ride my Honda 150 with a helmet.........coming home one night with a buddy on the back, we hit a big dog in the curve of the road, went flying off into the cemetery across the road from Mt Zion Baptist Church sliding on the dew covered grass..........when we finally stopped sliding and realized we were alive and in one piece.......barely any abrasions..........we lay on the grass laughing our a$$e$ and then jumped up to go check on the dog we had hit.........he was long gone too.

Sorry about your aversion to raw oysters Scott.......the first mistake is eating ANY seafood from a RED LOBSTER and referring to it as seafood..................must have eaten 4- dozen the Saturday of the Zurich Classic from a sky box on 18........and then hit Acme Seafood (actually real seafood) out on 17 green for more later while following some groups..........good salty raw oysters is truly one of natures miracles and best kept secret to those that do not like them.........more for us that do.

Mel, I have a very close friend who is a lobbyist. He hears things that are going on the press isn't reporting. The main areas of concern have to do with an oceans treaty, a world poverty U.N. program a U.N. child protection program and some program that would require all nations to go through the U.N. even if it is a defensive action. It would have to be approved by all 190 members and besides military issues would have an impact on individual gun ownership. I thought I heard something similar involving a book written by Dick Morris. Several of these things are currently being negotiated by various Obama cabinet members. My friend stated they want to get all these things through during the lame duck congress and before Americans are aware of them and to make them nearly unbreakable so future members of congress have their hands tied. It all sounds rather black helicopter like to me but my neighbor is in a position to hear about these scary things. None of these things will help America but they will definitely hurt us in many ways. Believe it or not, the unions would love to cover those farm jobs even if that means unionizing the migrant workers.

    Thanks I think,

I do try to look at things from more then one angle, even if it doesn't change my opinion. Maybe it allows me to think of a compromise, something they don't do in Washington anymore because the moderates are retiring or being voted out, like in Indiana yesterday.
