Don't know if you guys have heard. Stan died this morning. Hell of a man. Mike Davis sent a real nice letter to our chapter. Kenneth Ingram, UMD.

    Ken,

I heard the sad news this morning. Every time I saw Stan he had a smile on his face and was always willing to share what he knew. What a loss for his family and the turfgrass industry.

    Greetings:

I just have to tell you my first experience with Stan. I'm going back 30 to 35 years now.

One day this car pulls in by the maintenance facility and this guy gets out and says - hello Bob! I said yes and he introduced himself as Stan Zontek. He realized he was early and I asked him how early and he stated about an hour. I said good, I'd like you to look at my first green a Vesper Velvet Bent grass before the golfers come out and then we can get down to business after we have a coffee. We have coffee in the clubhouse and I said your scheduled time for a visit starts in half an hour. He looked at me kind of funny and he has that curious way of staring you down.

I said Stan, my name is Ron Kirkman not Bob Mucciarone and this is Needham Golf Club not the Dedham Hunt & Polo Club. He's a couple miles down the road. I called Bob from the clubhouse and informed him that I would guide Stan to his club and we should be there in about 10 minutes. Stan was really good natured about the event and he still showed up about 15 minutes ahead of schedule. I think this was his first visit in our area.

Where ever I saw Stan after that episode he always said - "Hello Bob Jr."

    Rest in Peace my Friend.

Capt. and Zack, great stories, what I love about this business is the story telling, hopefully it never goes away.

These stories pay a great tribute to Mr. Zontek, and that is how he should be remembered.
