Well I hope everyones Saturday morning started out better than mine.
I walk in and one of my high school employees is looking rather agitated. He had been off for a couple of weeks under psych care and texted me last night to say he was better and would be into work today. He didn't look better but any beating heart on a Saturday morning is a good thing.
I go to my office to update the website and one of my female employees burst in screaming "he's got a knife and locked himself in the bathroom!" I run in and scream at him to come out or I'm kicking down the door. He comes out, eyes like John Lydon, wielding an 8 inch carving knife at the ready, with his arms arms all sliced up and bleeding. I grabbed his wrist and wrestled the knife away.
Now as Jeffy Wallace can attest, I'm a tall skinny person with the athletic abilities of a slug who just mainlined heroin. Had that 8 inch knife gone through me, there would have been 5 plus inches showing out my back....
Adrenalin is a weird thing. I barely remember what happened other than that the outcome was that nobody was killed
I think everyone, including myself, was in shocked at my actions.
I've always tried my best to live by the Motto " There is no confrontation too small that I can't run from"
I'm still shaking like a leaf

    Red,

Sorry to hear about your difficult employee situation for sure! Happy to hear you are not injured and OK! What was the outcome with the young man? Is he Ok and undergoing medical help? I hope all works out Ok, I could not imagine dealing with such madness myself! One never imagines these things to occur, but it seems you did well! May the man above bless you for your quick thinking and calm attitude!!!!

Down here we have 9-1-1. As soon as you cross the line I call someone who carries a gun for a living. I am glad it worked out for you though.

Not the ideal way to start a Saturday morning but hey it worked out. You both survived which is a good thing.

I'm glad you're ok. Perhaps you could call your MP and suggest a wave of restrictive laws against knives.
More money for mental health care would probably just be a waste.

If there were knife control laws in place, and he didn't have the knife, would this have happened? Or would he have just grabbed something else - screwdriver, shovel, chainsaw - or whatever else is in a maintenance shop?

Good thing Canada doesn't have gun laws like the US. Your employee could have legally had a nice assault rifle with a 100 round clip. It's funny when you mention gun control. The pro gun people automatically say "you're not taking my guns away from me". No one is saying take all guns away. I am saying have some common sense gun laws. Is an assault rifle, large clips, LARGE purchases of ammo really needed. Many times guns used for home protection are stolen or end up shooting the wrong person anyway. Go ahead, fire away....I know you'll have to have that gun pried from your cold dead hands. Oh, and yes I do own guns. They are put away, never taken out to play with or show off. The only thing they will ever kill is a few pheasants and squirrels.

Bunkers got raked, greens cut although the lines were a little wobbly.
911 was an option that I likely should have taken but I wasn't thinking straight and he became such a pathetic soul after the rage died down. He had also been a great employee over the past two seasons and with everything he was going through a police record might have tipped the scales permanently.
He texted me last night to say he went home and OD'd but I had phoned his father who found him before it was too late
He is now in the psych ward for two weeks of observation and hopefully treatment. Mental illness usually strikes in the late teens, which is where he is at

Wow-wee Red. You wrestled away an 8" knife? Reactive instincts and adrenaline are crazy traits. I have to believe, looking back on it, that you wonder what the hell you were doing. But good on ya Red. You[u"> did[/u"> save the day.

Depression is a brutal thing. I lost two close friends to it. Hopefully he will get the help he needs. Red, nice job. You gave him a chance at life.

    Red,

You must have attended that seminar about resolving conflicts in the workplace. Step number four, as I recall: Scream and threaten to kick down the door.

    Step number five:

Remove crazed person from an already isolated room, bringing him to within knife slashing distance of many more employees. If you happen to die trying to grab the knife, there will be many others to replace you. There should already be a plan in place for who tries next. Base it on performance. The slackers are first up, after the boss.

And, it's always good to have the group trained to have steel pipes ready to threaten him, while in unison, screaming, "Oh my [size=150">GOD![/size"> He's got a knife! We're ALL GOING TO [size=150">DIE!" [/size">

    That usually calms things down.

Larry, you putz! What the hell were you thinking?

Yikes Red that's wild. So can I hire him in two weeks then? (Just kidding)

Been an absolute disaster for staff this year, don't know if you've seen similar? Seeing how close we are perhaps I'll swing by and see you one of these many rainy days and meet face-to-face (remember when people used to do that???). If not rain, then in the fall on a frosty morning.

Depression is a helluva thing. I'd say I'm blessed with a good crew, but that'd be a lie. I've developed a good crew over many years combining cybernetic implants, genetic breeding, police background checks, drug and alcohol screens, and the most accurate and fool-proof -- driving by the village tavern to see who's car is in the parking lot.

That's just the issue....I wasn't thinking. I admit that. If the guy was a man mountain like yourself, I might have thought twice, but he was a scared 150 lbs red headed kid.
I guess in hind site I should have just got my Colt out of the glove box and fired a few rounds through the door.

Great. Encourage him to waste perfectly good bullets. Besides, they'd dock his pay for the repairs, when all he was trying to do was ventilate the bathroom.

How many of you have actually met Larry? He is totally misrepresenting himself.

Here's his real size......using his stage name of Richard Kiel. Notice that there a couple of quick clips of him grabbing a knife and crashing through a door? Coincidence? I think not.

He was also in Pale Rider. That's why he picked that nickname.

You SOB, you promised you wouldn't release that. That was a long time ago. I only shared that with you cause I thought you were a friend. It's obvious, from your last few posts that we are through as buddies.
Just wait til I post that one of you being taken down by the border guards with pepper spray. The screaming little girl that you were!

I can't believe so many are making light of this & joking about guns. Yeah, ballsy call by the guy who says "We have 911 here .. Call a guy with a gun to handle this" That's why so many kids are shot dead in the states. I say this incident was handled with personal care and true bravery .. you should be commended as a true Man & Great Canadian by your local authorities. Very few would have the courage to handle this as you did.
