I am pretty sure I have gout. I have not been to a doctor yet, but I have the symptoms. I am pain-free at the moment, but I have tested it. If I eat a nice steak and have a couple beers I will be hobbling in the morning. So far I have learned that I cannot eat beef, pork, mackerel, herring, beans and whole grains. For gout, cherries and non-fat milk are encouraged. Vegetables and chicken are okay. Anyone with experience with this have any wisdom to share?

Well, I'm not sure if I have it, but if I do, it can't be political-leaning related.

The big toe on my right foot will every once in awhile give me a sharp, quick pain, and then it's gone. No advanced warning, ever. Sometimes three or four times a day, sometimes not at all for three or four days. Been going on for about a month now.

I told my wife about it and first thing came to mind was gout. Like you I have not been to the doctor about it. Doesn't bother me enough yet to schedule an appointment, I guess.

Can you share a link or YouTube video?

Scott, My brother in law has had gout a few times. I know he has been to the doc a few times to have it checked out. From what I know a lot of it comes from a poor diet and I think he has been given a prescription to try and take care of it. I'm no expert, but I don't think its something you don't want to have checked out.

Had an employee that would drink himself in to oblivion every night while eating at the local restaurant. This carried on for about 10 years. He had a bad case of gout and could barely bed his arms. Doctor would tell him to stop drinking. He refused. After a lifetime of being divorced and working on the golf course, the alcohol finally caught up to him. He refused to recognize the pain, but we all new what was happening.

Thanks for not mentioning my name, but I am feeling better.

I took Alopurinol, one a day, for years, no gout attacks. Generic is cheap. Could eat or drink anything I wanted. Not one attack.

Steak and beer seem to be the killer for me. I normally have a one pound steak and 3 beers for dinner. I cannot do that anymore it seems. If I do my right toe/foot become so sore I can barely walk, much less drive.

The only time I have a problem is during asparagas season. I love it fresh but the toe pain creeps in every year if I do not watch it.

Asparagus! Really? I love asparagus. I thought you could eat vegetables with gout! What else can't I eat?

    David and Scott,

You guys are both invited out here the last weekend in April. The world-famous Stockton Asparagus Festival takes place that weekend every year.

Alcohol and some fatty foods tend to agravate gout. My assistant and one member of my regular golf group suffers from gout as well. Very painful but willing to trade it for shingles at the moment. Going on 9 weeks of shingles and no relief in sight.

Gout is caused by high Uric acid levels in the body....kinda like having a low Ph..... 10% of people have it in there blood and 90% in there kidneys....The ones with the kidneys have the worst issue's you can't eliminated most of it out of your system....The pain comes from a process called Hyperuricemia, which forms crystals in between the joints and hurts like hell. High Purine foods are a leading cause of gout with people that have it. That's why meat especially RED is not good for you. Pork and lamb aren't good either. Some fish too. As far as alcohol.....it would be better to have a good ol C&C than beer. Spinach, Cauliflower, Asparagus, Mushrooms will aggravate gout too. Carbonated drinks, milk, bread and Lots and Lots of water are great for gout. And last but not least Exercise. But.....there are some great medications available too....that keep the levels in check so we can indulge like everybody else.

I don't know what shingles is, but I am quite sure I do not want to know. The one thing I do know is it is bad. Thank you for the information Robert. I have concluded that my case of gout is mild compared to others. I just can't eat a big steak. I am okay with that. I probably should not be doing that anyway. I am trying to avoid additional meds. I take enough already and my liver is starting to rebel.

My liver failed 25 years ago after taking a prescription medication. I was in the hospital for two weeks, then sent home after being told that I would not survive. They put a special cover on my mattress to protect it, but could also act as a body bag with a zipper. I slept 22 hours per day for 3 months, then my liver started working again.

I have been fighting it for about a year. Five attacks in different spots on both feet. Two on the ankle knuckle, one on the heal, one on the top of the foot and the last one was a big toe. Comes with no warning and lasts about two days. Been to the doctor. He said to track what I eat. Not much in common but chicken twice and lots of red wine. The foods suggested are in direct conflict to lowering cholesterol. Nothing to eat so just may stay with the wine.

Robert pretty much said it all. I've been living with it for many years now, but it is held in check with daily meds (allopurinol). Indocin is/was the med for acute attacks. When I first got it, I awoke without any warning and when my foot hit the floor, I almost went through the roof! I thought every bone in my foot was broken, it was so painful. Suck it up, and go see a doctor. It is very controllable.

Same here. I have been taking the allopurinol daily for the past 10 years or thereabouts. Haven't had a gout attack since. It is a very simple fix for what can be a very painful disease. The first attack I had, I went to the Dr. thinking I had fractured a bone in my foot.

You can try to control it with diet though it is extremely difficult and you still may get the attacks. It is much easier to take the meds and then eat and drink whatever you like.

It can be hereditary and run in the family. I remember my dad and an uncle always bitching about 'a touch of the gout'. Cheers.
