Didn't think it could happen to me, but it did. Been here 10 years and brought the greens from 10% grass to some really fine greens and have improved the quality of the course every year. Tuesday morning my boss and hr director were waiting for me at my office after calling me off the course. I was told, due to budget cuts, that the position of golf course superintendent is being eliminated!! Unfortunately about 5 years ago, I hired a really good assistant and he will do fine.

Rant over, does no good anyway. However if any of y'all around SE Kansas or East Texas know of anything, let me know. Sucks being 58 and trying to find a job .

So what are they going to call the Assistant Superintendent since they have determined that a Superintendent is not needed? What will be the job description of the new title? I bet it looks remarkably similar to a Superintendent's. This seems to happen a lot in our industry and I wonder if it is even legal. (I bet it isn't.)

In Florida they are apparently going all out in assisting the unemployed in their job hunts. I hope you have a program this good in your area.

Anyway, I wish you the very best.

Ironic that someone with the title HR Director was part of this. If there ever was a position to eliminate.............

It's amazing really to hear this and I feel very bad for you. The position of superintendent IMHO is the most key at all facilities, no matter what the budget or style of course.

This was clear to me when I hit about 16 yrs of age when I had the chance to either work in the pro shop or head out of the golf course grounds dept.

It's just another company chopping a larger salary and not looking at the value the higher managers bring.

    Good luck to you.

Thanks y'all. So who knows about Shangri La on Grand Lake? My first honeymoon was spent ther in the 70's. My second wife and I went there about 10 years ago and didn't even check in. It was awesome years ago but sucked when we went back. Pay sounds OK so let me know what you know!!!!

    Thanks

I always have pushed my assistants on to better things after a couple of years. I haven't even had an assistant since 2008.

When I resigned for a new position 3 weeks ago, I had a spray/irrigation tech as an "assistant". He just graduated in May with a Civil Engineering degree and worked at the course for 5 summers the last 2 as a tech. No formal turf training/education.

This individual was then promoted to superintendent the day I left. There was obviously no value in their mind for a trained superintendent and all I can say is good luck to them all. For this and many other similar reasons I spent my entire tenure there looking for my next post and happy to say I was fortunate enough to get out of there.

Jon, good luck and I am sure you will find what you need, experience is worth a lot, however some employers do not see it like it is.

    Jon,
Very sorry to hear of your misfortune. Suppose I should count my luck (since I am older than you) that I am still employed under today's economic conditions within our industry. I sincerely wish you the best. Any of us could be making a similar post in the future.

I resigned my position as "Assistant" when the GM called me into his office and there was my Boss. They said "They" had lost their faith in him. They told him in Oct of 08, he had until Dec of 08. So we went to our annual conference together, and I could see it in his eyes. I left the day he did....we hugged and cried...it sucked!!
He is now my chemical rep....I was without work for 2 months. We have a chapter meeting their next wk. I said I'll never step foot on that property again and I won't. He helped me land this job at a Municipal Course here in the panhandle. I stayed with him and his wife and commuted 50 miles one way for over a month. I had 50 dollars to my name at that time, but great credit. This was a Country "wannabe"Club where he was terminated. I'm getting Married Sept 10 2011...To "My Best Friend" and he and his wife will be there also. I've had it with these Type of courses with their here today gone tomorrow agenda ! I'm pretty Butt Sore about this whole Industry in that regard. If anyone needed some protection in the industry, it would be us. I see an advertisement every year for a Corp. Mnged club that I personally know of a Super that got the hell out BEFORE it was too late. Now their soliciting again. It's Ridiculous and Unethical. Entities such as those are a TRUE ABOMINATION to this profession. I did what I NEW was the right thing to do, and I sure don't wanna get in that position again.

It sounds like you made some good choices. This industry has certainly become very predatory over the past 30 years. It was not like that when I made the decision to join it.

Yes Sir Scott...I've read a lot of your postings and must say, I respect you Sir:) The World to me Isn't what it used to be anymore.....I'm Sure my deceased Grandfather would have said the same thing years ago. I've said you could take Humanity....put it in a petre dish.. inocculate it with perversion .. and see how long it takes to manifest its self.. There is a cure....but it hasn't come yet...:)
