Welcome to fire season early in SoCal. Got evacuated yesterday but was able to go home by 8 p.m. Fire got within a mile of my house. Hats off to our fire and police. Everything went smoothly and with 850 acres burned, not a single structure was damaged! Seems our key public servants have learned quite a bit about working together since 2003 and 2007. In spite of no humidity and screaming wind, the fire fighters did a remarkable job.

Glad the wind was calm last night. Last I heard was about 1,600 acres have burned and is 25% contained. Cal Fire, SDFD and all the fire departments are doing a great job in saving all the houses they did yesterday. Glad that no houses have burned up. Let's hope for a great day for the Fire Departments to get the fire under control.

Great news to hear, fire fighters and police always go so unappreciated, especially when pay and pensions are talked about, but they should have all our respect. They certainly earn it.

On a side note and probably for the other forum, I guess it's a good thing we don't have that smaller government the GOP was asking for?

Smaller government doesn't mean smaller police or fire departments. Yes, the reporting is now up to over 1600 acres which makes it even more amazing no structures caught fire. I have always said give the firefighters and police the upper end of anything we can provide. The nature of their job certainly earns that benefit and respect! On the other hand Mel, Librarians retiring at over $200,000 a year seems a bit inflated for the job they perform! Priorities matter!

I can agree with that, I think part of the problem is pay scales can get so out of wack, especially when there are few jobs to compare in the private vs. public sector. And it works both ways, I know I don't make anywhere near the average as the private sector, but I do know my benefits are good, I have a pension plus social security, and job security is pretty great. I can't complan too much.

Of course people will say to be more like a business, but some things governments do are kind of hard to relate to being like a business, especially when its service/safety related, plus when we want full account of our tax dollars it creates that layer of redundancy that drives up costs.

I do think some government services have been getting outsourced more, I know for an example, we have had tree pruning services in the neighborhood for the last month clearing out limbs near the power lines. No telling what the cost might have been if they had all been city utility workers, of course they wouldn't have a big enough crew to get it done in a timely manner anyway.

Saw that one coming a mile away. Leave it to the lefties to take it to the extreme.

I am by far no expert in California politics and tree hugging, but why don't you guys do prescribed burns to take away the fuel during a season when it can't get out of hand? We do prescribed burns here all the time. They work. And why do you guys keep planting those Eucalyptus trees everywhere that are like a box of matches? I just don't get it....

No more extreme than cutting Medicaid, wanting to cut social security that everyone pays into, wanting to cut education budgets, not wanting to do infrastructure projects, let's cut all regulations so we can pollute everything like back in the 1960's and 70's. Or let's just privatize everything, when someone makes a profit on what's serving society, I don't think there will be a positive outcome.

Of course I don't consider myself way way lefty, just common sense (although it might not always sound that way, but when spending let's look at the returns on our investments when possible). The big problem is we all want to cut government and I don't disagree there can be some trimming here and there, we just can't agree on what we should cut and not, as we all have our pet projects. (Well, I guess nobody likes handing out money to welfare, but we know cutting that isn't going to be solving any of our problems.)

I can attest to that- took me 4 hours to get home yesterday with all the road closures. Fires popping up everywhere- many next to highways. Fire on Camp Pendleton on both sides of I-5- first delay. Fire in O'side slows 76 to a crawl. Get past only to find SR 76 closed in Bonsall #2- detour to I-15, same fire stops that freeway- back to Bonsall on side roads & detour up through Fallbrook. Fire in De Luz sends back to I-15. Everyone trying to get back on I-15 at mission road then guess what... car catches on fire by ramp and another delay. What an oddysey.

He must have been evacuated from the fire? I hear him every Sunday doing the countdown, I didn't know The Go Go's were still making music, I think they need to update their sound though, they haven't changed from the 80's.

Now that the fires are all out, I will bet we will find an arson pattern here. The one by my house was started by a backhoe in a construction site. Must have sparked a rock next to dry grass. Andy, I wish we in California could give you a better answer but CA regulations allow you to remove 50% of brush up to a certain distance from a property line. We have conflicting laws between Fish and Game due to endangered species and a number of other government agencies. On one hand you are responsible and on the other you will get fined if you touch it. We are truly insane as local and state governments go. Controlled burns during our cooler season would be easy to do. The do it on National Forest land in our mountains but we can't have it done near our houses. I have a hill called Black Mountain right behind me that hasn't burned in 30 years! It is bone dry with plants containing oil that actually explode when hit. They regenerate from fire. Land of we used to be able to say, fruits and nuts but that may not be allowed anymore!
