    Good Morning,

Well, the kids are finally to the age where Disney is a possibility (4, 6, 8). I'm looking for any advice from those of you who have traveled to the GIS in Orlando and brought along the family for a Disney visit.

Is it better to stay near the conference center and taxi out to Disney or stay near Disney and taxi in to the GIS? I'd really appreciated any travel advice, hotel/housing thoughts, food plans, money saving tips?

    Dustin

Get a room right at Disney so the family can enjoy their day without traveling while you are at the GIS.

Check with the hotels. Many Orlando hotels have shuttle services to Disney. Either free or for a small fee.

    Dustin,

Steve is absolutely right - get a room at Disney and stay in the Park and you get to the conference center via car, taxi or bus.

Funny you should mention this. I plan to play in the golf tournament and one-half hour ago I just emailed my three daughters and told them it's on me if they want to go. Their ages are 53, 49, 39. You see it never ends. Plan on going again and again and again. I love Disney World and of course Las Vegas.

Okay, I will be way out there. The trailers at Fort Wilderness are nice and significantly less than the rooms. You can take boats to the other hotels and parks. There were always tons of kids for your kids to play with there. When I had a young family we had the most fun there.

    Scott,

Thank you for sharing your idea. I am looking for as many options to consider as possible. However, I can pretty much guaranty that my wife will give me the "no chance in hell" response. I am hoping that we can make it through this trip without the need to refinance the home :) . Besides housing, were there any other surprise costs??

Please keep replies coming. Any specific hotels/resorts that you'd recommend?

My sister's husband works at Disney so we go at least once a year and have stayed at almost every resort. Each has pluses and minuses but all are good.

We did the cabins at Fort Wilderness 3 times and it was great. About upper mid/high range in price, $382/night but the kids had a full size bed plus bunks in the bedroom and my wife and I used the murphy bed in the family room. Having a full service kitchen was nice, especially for saving money on breakfasts. The size was perfect for our then family of 5. Another bonus, you park within feet of the door to the cabin, great when lugging sleeping kidos. Negatives, to get to the dining area or water taxis to Magic Kingdom you have to either walk, bike, golf cart, or take a campground resort bus, and the pools are pretty basic. Hoop dee doo review (dinner show) is fantastic but might be too old for your kids to get, plus there is a really good dinner buffet there, Trails End. There are a lot of other activities there like pony rides, mini speed boats, campfire movies with s'moores, hay rides, etc.

The best resort pool by far is the Beach and Yacht club. Great slide and most of the pool is sand bottom. Easy walk to Epcot and a great view of the Boardwalk.

Animal Kingdom Lodge is really cool. The Savanah rooms have views of animals right outside the room balcony. Nothing like opening the curtain in the morning to have a giraffe feet away looking at you. They have the best breakfast buffet at Boma. $$$$$ but tasty. My wife didn't like the really long walk from the parking lot to the room especially lugging sleeping kids and their gear.

Wilderness Lodge is really cool and the boat ride to the Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios is convenient. Great family style dinner there in the Whispering Canyon Café. Fun atmosphere with sing alongs, stick horse races, etc. during dinner. Just don't ask for any ketsup. $$$$$ but worth it.

We have also stayed at the Polynesian, Coronado springs several times, Caribbean Beach, Port Orleans, and the All Stars.

Due to really tight family funds we are staying at All Star Sports again next month but getting 2 adjoining rooms. The rooms are a little smaller with no fridge or microwave. We are taking our own small microwave to sterilize our son's respiratory therapy gear, and since they are renovating their food court, to heat up breakfast stuff. We keep a cooler in the room and the kids take turns keeping it filled with ice. The pools are pretty basic with no water slides.

Staying at Disney allows for free parking at the parks and BIG BONUS, every park has extra magic hours (extended hours) exclusively for Disney resort guests. Some open earlier and some stay open later. The crowds are lighter and most rides have no lines.

Get to the parks early if no extra magic hours work for you. You can take snacks. With your kids ages, most ride lines won't be too bad.

Also, resort guests can have their souvenirs shipped from the parks to the resort for pickup the next day so you don't have to carry them around all day.

Five years ago I was standing in line with my "kids" at a new ride at Universal Studios. I did not realize it, but I had a great big smile on my face. My daughter asked, "What are you smiling about?" I responded, "I just realized that I am not going to stand in one of these lines again." How about this? Your kids are still very small to appreciate Disney. Stay in Cocoa and commute to Orlando for the show. Let the young ones experience the beach, something truly amazing and get the 8yo surfing lessons. It will be cheaper than Disney and they will never, ever forget it.

You cannot beat the quality time that occurs between a Mom and her kids on the beach. I remember being a little kid with my Mom on the beach. I do not remember being a kid with my Mom at Disney although I did both. Teaching your kid to surf is a gift that builds confidence and never goes away. The Haunted Mansion will always be there.

All depends on your budget Dustin. For me, the Disney hotels have always been out of my price range. There is no shortage of decent hotels/condos in the area that offer multi bedroom units, kitchenettes, and some with free breakfast. Driving to the park is easy, some even offer shuttles. If you are close to the strip there is a nice trolley that can take you to the convention center.

As far as Disney goes, that will be where the sticker shock sets in. A multi day, multi park (it's nice to take the water ferry from park to park) for a family can get up there in a hurry. Also food in the park is of course expensive, so having a hotel with a free breakfast and maybe even a free happy hour is a nice perk. My 2 cents.

I would look at Vacation Rental by Owner. vrbo.com.

I would recommend staying on site. There are plenty of options in every price range. It will make it easier for your family to get around and stay busy while you are at the show. We have done this for the past few times the show was in Orlando and having the family in a spot where they can go and do is much less stressful. My wife would take the kids early and beat the crowds, come back mid day for lunch and a nap and we would all go in the afternoon when I returned from the show. With younger kids its nice to be able to get back and rest in the middle of the day vs trying to do long days where everyone gets worn out and cranky. Good Luck and I am sure the kids will enjoy what ever you do.

If I did stay off site. I would look at the Nickelodeon hotel (right outside the main gate). Great for the kids. It is a little higher cost but has a lot going on for kids and offers transportation to the parks.

Stayed at Art of Animation last week. A value resort with similar quality and amenities as the All-Star resorts. The difference is the family suites. This was nice. Mom and I had a master bedroom (small but private) and a master bath. The kids had a sofa bed and a murphy bed. There is also a small kitchenette with a sink, microwave, and refrigerator. The eating table converted into the support for the murphy bed. The kids also had their own full bath which reduced the time for our family to get up and going in the morning. They had their own tv and we had one.
