Anyone flying to either location better keep track of more than weather reports. Looks like air travel may very soon be impacted near Alaska and all of Europe due to volcanoes about ready to go. Iceland has a big one and Redoubt in Alaska though not as big is right in the middle of a busy flight pattern. Stranded people and cancelled flights are very likely. Anyone traveling to the Big Island within the next year may be in for a real treat but be careful where you stay. Mauna Loa is showing signs of magma rising and a possible eruption for the first time since the early 80's. Earthquake activity in all 3 locations is on the rise and geologists are paying very close attention to possibilities in all three locations. Nature always wins!

    Sandy,

My daughter flies to Sweden on Monday, 25 August and lands the next day in Stockholm. Is this a problem with the Volcano? Flies back on Sept 1 from Copenhagen. Thanks,

Not yet but the Icelandic geologists are watching this very carefully. It is under the biggest glacier in the country so besides an eruption causing problems with flight, flooding is going to be huge downstream. These things can always calm back down but the earthquake activity is extremely high and hints at magma rising. Could be today, may be months from now but it will probably blow fairly soon.

Buy trip insurance and book with a single carrier for the whole trip. My sister-in-law planned a family trip to Africa and due to a screwup on a regional airline, not associated with the main booking flight, they arrived too late to make their connection for the trip to Africa. Trip insurance paid for everything except the regional carrier that was booked separately.

They dropped the alert from red to orange for the moment. Maybe the eruption won't break all the way through the glacier. If it does, air travel will certainly take a hit. They are still very concerned but mother nature does things on her own time. Just ask the people in the Napa area who were hit by a quake from a fault that has been inactive for 1.6 million years! Now that is patience.

500 earthquakes in Iceland overnight. Sounds like something is definitely going on. If it blows through the glacier, flights will become a major problem. Maybe it will stay below the ice.

Will Iceland have to pay a carbon tax for all the emissions?

Al Gore is on his way to collect.

I can see it now. Al Gore dies in fiery plane crash as engine flames out from volcanic debris. Gore was on the way to fine the country of Iceland for a leaky volcanic fissure spewing carbon into the atmosphere.Gore had ignored flight warnings because it was imperative that Iceland be punished for such a major environmental breach! Experts report that flight should not have been allowed to fly in the volcanic ash zone but Gore refused to cancel the flight due to the urgency of his mission.

Volcano is getting close to a dangerous phase. So far it has just been a lava event but it is now melting the glacier and could quickly become explosive. If the melt water and magma come in contact, an explosive phase will begin. Besides the flooding issue of a melting glacier, flights will be impacted if it blows up. Huge amounts of lava have been pouring out of these vents. What a unique country.
