I see it will cost the American taxpayers a tidy sum of $ 4,000,000 for the first family's Christmas jaunt to Hawaii up a mere $ 1,500,000 from 2010. And I thought fuel prices had declined.

Well if congress would have done it's job, they wouldn't have had to take separate planes.

Did see on the news the last two days that we spent more on fuel this year, and it equated to 8% of our income. Don't know how we compared with that except in October, two trips to Tulsa, one to St. Louis and one to Columbia with the band, now we've got winter drum line with a trip to Ky and Dayton Ohio.

I like the gas prices right now, helped when we moved my mom's stuff out of her house last week.

Gas is still over $4.00 gallon here in Hawaii. It has gone down 25 cents over the last month or so. Shipping companies are still increasing fuel surcharges and union wages keep going up.

We hired him as our leader and with that comes the perks. I just read the cost break-downs and B Obama is paying all his own room bills +++ and because of security the costs go sky high. He takes far less vacation time than, G Bush who was a master of the Vacation.

Keith is right, but it is still a slap in the face to the millions who can't afford presents, much less a vacation. What ever happened to shared pain?

I don't know the particulars of the expenses involved with getting the POTUS to and from the islands. But I can't begrudge the guy for "taking some time off"; he's still working regardless. What's he suppose to do, take a commercial flight and stay at the LaQuinta?

I disagree with most of his opinions and ideas but have no problem with the President and his family taking vacation. He is the President and that position comes with perks and families need that time.

It also comes with responsibility and I am sure he spends more time working than vacationing during the time away. That alone adds to the cost as staff members, security and technology flies with him.

It's the same as your members paying for you to go to Las Vegas. You are working and I'm sure he isn't shutting off the cell phone.

Let him enjoy the time. At least it isn't a week long jaunt to Europe to see Paris, Milan, England and such. That would cost probably 10x as much.

It shows that Obama has at least a modicum of intelligence to vacation in Hawaii in December and not northern Europe, where the weather is like a cold, grey, shower from November to March.

    W. used to like his vacations in Texas in August, if that tells us anything.

Now where someone vacations is based on intelligence............makes perfect sense to me.
