    Poor Newt.

    [youtube">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK0ieX9mHr4[/youtube">

The reference Newt made is here, if you were unfamiliar.
During a campaign stop former Speaker Newt Gingrich mocked the green car lobby with "How DARE we go out and drive vehicles bigger than their bicycles!" He went on to say he doesn't have anything against people who want to drive electric cars like the Volt, calling it an interesting experimental car and repeating the oft-said talking point "The average family who buys it earns $170,000 per year," and several other digs against the Chevy Volt. All that led to him saying "here's my point, you can't put a gun rack in a Volt,"

I checked out the Volt at the Chicago Auto show. Roomier than what I expected but I was sticker shocked. The average jamoke won't be buying this car anytime soon.

Yeah, I heard they were pricey. They'll follow the tech trend, probably. Remember when flat screen televisions and smart phones came out 5 years ago. Prices where triple what they are today. Time will tell. I think the important part is someone took a leap of faith and went after it. It takes guts to do that.
Taking the lead with anything takes big guts. We all know that. Your back is exposed constantly to nay-sayers and anyone who has interest in competing interests -- in this case people with oil investments.

It's really a simple equation as to why alternative powered vehicles are being resisted at all.
The money invested in oil development hasn't been fully realized yet. The folks that have their inheritances and fortunes locked up in oil development futures and all the ancillary industry that supports it are in no way interested in anything but that. Naturally. Money makes people do funny things.
I think the technology and consumer demand is going to win out. There are too many out there now to ignore (hybrids) and pass off as a fad.

Out three year old Prius cost us 16K, had 28,000 miles on it.
Some quick and dirty math on our old car vs. the Prius considering tank size, gas price @ $3-4/gal, and comparative mileage has us saving around $4000 per year on fuel. That's a lot for us.

I've read too much about how gas prices are manipulated to believe for a minute that drilling or domestic development are going to bring any long-lasting change in gas prices.
If I really want to make a difference in anything that has to do with consumption, whether my own weight, or my fuel use in home and vehicle, I'm going to make changes in the equipment I'm using first. I'm going to tweak my methods to make my things efficient. If I refuse to embrace that, I'm going nowhere.
Affording those changes is something each of us has to balance out for ourselves.

Have heard they have had some fire issues from the batteries in the Volt.........Chevy offered a full refund to any that wanted it that had purchased their electric car. In urban settings the car probably has a use. For many that drive distances daily it does not. But again if it fits your plan and you can afford it.....go for it.

My son will be in NYC next Tuesday along with his COO to GIVE AWAY 20 CNG vehicles to the city of NY I belive to promote the use of compressed natural gas. A sensible alternative fuel use or a very abundant natural resourse that is everywhere in the US. He is supposed to be on Fox and Friends in the 6:00 hour EST.

We may not be able to drill our way out of high gas prices currently but in time we can go a long way to helping our own situation here at home by doing so. We would not be held hostage by those that hate us....other than a few tree huggers but we're all on the same team..........I think.

If the rest of the world is willing to pay $100 per barrel, how are we going to get for-profit companies to sell domestically produced oil to the US for less? If we increase production OPEC will decrease production to maintain the cost. Eventually we will realize that there are considerations like energy and health care that are just too universal and important to be left up to the free market.

Strange that someone like Newt would make noise about the volt. I guess between that and the moon station etc. he's no longer (if he ever was) a viable candidate. Somebody's got to be the first, and there's always going to be problems with the first of anything, but it's a necessary step in progress. I imagine the first wheel wasn't so smooth and it probably had it's naysayers too. Besides, people with the income to buy a volt just might be rebuplicans so why make the comment in the first place.

Steve- glad you're having success with the prius. I bought a new commuter in December but opted for the 2012 ford focus. Pleased to report that I'm getting much better than the stated EPA estimated mileage. (This was confirmed for the focus and a couple of other models in a press release from consumer reports the other day). I'm averaging between 37 and 40mpg per tank- mostly highway miles but some in town use. I couldn't be happier with it and it's made in the USA to boot. I, for one, am happy with the new improvements on fuel economy by the automakers.

Not necessarily. Democrats are arguably wealthier than republicans.

The Focus is a great car. I am most impressed with Hyundai. They have come a long way from the tin-traps of their past.

Clay, agree with the Hyundai. Passed my 4 year old hyundai accent on to my daughter to take to college. Was a good car, tough to beat the warranty too. I was all set to get another accent, the hp and mpg were improved over my model and they also made it a 5 door v.3, but the focus had a little sexier design and it was made in the USA which matters right now. Got a heckuva deal too.

Wife drives a Hyundai Veracruz........slightly cheaper than the H2 to operate.........a very good vehicle so far.

Correction on my comment on Friday about giving 20 vehicles to the City of NY........that's a no no. My son's companyy is giving away.........vehicle, taxes and fuel (compressed natural gas) for the life of the vehicle to 21 of their lucky employees. Anyone not in management got to go online (Chevy trucks and SUV's) and choose the options and color scheme for a random drawing for employee's. Pretty cool perk the company is giving out. Each employee will be provided with his or her own fueling station at their homes to operate their vehicles. My son estimates the cost for the company to be close to $1,500,000.

I believe one should take time to find out how much it will cost in 5 to 6 yrs to replace those wonderful batteries. What produces the energy that allows you to plug in your car. I know there are choices and the NEED for more efficient energy resources, but we all should do some research and find out what a barrel of crude oil consists of, how it's refined, and what it's actually used for....you would be amazed. Lucy Lawless....an Actress was arrested for tresspassing on a "Shell" offshore oil rig recently...opposing drilling. I think they should show us by example, and not use ANYTHING derived from fossil fuel.
