Trying to determine how far into the transition zone ultradwarf are venturing. Any one with any insight? Is there any in your area Mel? Rumblings in my area. Not sure I'm convinced they"ll work here with the shorter growing season.

    Thanks, Terry

Just took a seminar at the show on this very subject. The Southeast Region USGA guys think they may spread all the way to Maryland, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, etc. Apparently they're already in Kentucky and southern Virginia. My buddy that's a super in southeast Va took the seminar, too, so they're looking pretty seriously at it. Covers for winter seem to be the key, along with shade removal. It seems that they're just as good dormant and painted as during the summer, and the ones I've seen around Atlanta this winter definitely look and putt great. You might try to talk to Patrick O'Brien or Chris Hartwiger from the USGA.

Your right Keith, however Jason is not in the transition zone, he's in Little Rock which is about a 100 miles south.

I grew in mini verde at a club in Dexter Mo. They were grown in at two separate times but the first 9 was grown in 2008. They do fine, I didn't cover last winter, they didn't cover this winter. This spring will be the real answer since this past winter has been colder. The greens were also put to bed very dry this year.

Not in Transition Zone. ? :?:

I think Champion will do fine where you are. Course at Eagle Mountain just converted in Batesville.

Feel free to call me if I can help.

I know they have them in Tulsa.

Dr. Lee Miller of the University of Missouri kind of investigated that with a talk he gave our chapter last May. We have a similar climate history as Paducah Ky. and there are two courses there. I think Lee's talk sparked some interest and I believe someone here in Springfield just installed one in a practice area to see what happens with it. No one has talked about it on their regular course yet.

    Terry,
I really think Champion will do good there. It is very cold tolerant and it has always handled a lot of winter traffic here with out any problems.

Do you currently have 419 fairways, rough,or tees? Has some of it encroached on your bentgrass greens? Is it living through the winter, uncovered, at cutting heights 419 should never be able to sustain? If your answer to these questions are yes then a ultra dwarf will surely live in your area.
