I have a 5740, 4240 and 3940 that were purchased in the last few years. I also have 13 various makes and models of John Deeres from 1980 to now including the more recent 4710 and 4320 tractors. The Kubotas are by far much, much better of a tractor. Our Deere's are always needing attention while our Kubotas keep rockin! I'm gonna get another tractor next year and will buy another L5740. No doubt, hands down the way to go. My old Deere's are tried and true. The new ones suck. I'll never buy another Deere again based on what I've had to deal with on 2-3 year old tractors.

    Andy,

Maybe you could just loan (or give) him on of your 17 tractors.

We bought a new Lastec in July with a Kubota 4740 tractor. It has the 40 hp pto which is what Lastec suggests and is an awesome combination. Can'tgo wrong with the Kubota tractor ! And much cheaper than the Deere.

Nobody buys a Ford (I mean New Holland) anymore? Bought two back during a grow-in a 2120 and 3115 (I think) and loved them. Of course I wasn't pulling a mower with them either.

Our club has had two JD 5225 tractors since 2005. They have not missed a beat and work almost daily. One is used for pulling our articulator(Lastec 721) and the other blowing, spreading, trailers and brush mowing. There both used during aerification and carry any load put to them. I would recommend the JD brand, They stand behind their product!!!!

The Progressive and Lastec articulators are both good machines. I would demo each or similar to see how it operates on your terrain. Steady preventative maintenance is a must on these units. We have been using the same Lastec since 2003 and it still performs very well year round.

Like any piece of equipment they are man made. Human error is always a factor in the operation from staff, but most importantly the "equipment maintenance" and respect given to it will keep it going as long as you like. They all work, its just a matter of what cares goes into it.

I would also check on the serviceability from the local dealers when making your selection. They are all good brands to choose from.

I think one of the major things to look at in a tractor is who and where can it get serviced. Currently, our Kubota has been nothing but a lemon, especially in the hydraulics system. have been around Kubota's for years, but this one has now put a sour taste in my mouth. It might be different if the vendor and warranty location weren't 200 miles away. I'd say, buy locally, as mentioned in previous posts, all things are man made and errors are bound to occur. Pick the features you want and be happy with the price and decision. I personally have no loyalty to a particular color, just gotta pick the best tool for the job.

    Jason,

I would agree with you that the larger Deere's are good, and deffinately better than the cheaper 4000 series. Seems like Deere really meant the smaller ones for light commercial and residential use. They just don't hold up to the rigors of our use.

And about dealer service....sent our 4320 to the dealer last June due to low throttle issues and bogging down. After four months, they sent it back and told me it can't be fixed and needed to be traded in. The tractor had 1,600 hours on it. We sent to another dealer in town and the problem turned out to be a $450 governor. Needless to say, we don't do much business with the first dealer anymore.

My old Deere's 6 of them which are from the early 80's still run like a champ. But, they don't build them like this anymore in that size. Everything has gone overseas for that size tractor. Cheaply made, plastic parts, computerized and expensive repairs. That being said, I wouldn't hesitate looking at the larger Deere's again, but it would boil down to price and Kubota would get the sale.
