The first thing about looking for head trimmer for string trimmers is to make for sure you are using one that has a large engine on it. I have tried many different style heads and found that our Stihl FS85 and Echo SRM 230 just don't have the butt needed for the heads. Here in Ohio, as soon as they hit the clay soil they bog down. I am sure many have had success with them, but I have not and I went back to buying a good, sturdy set of steak knives and that is how we trim heads and valve boxes.

I can't agree with Paul more. Although, we don't buy sturdy steak knives. I tried the manual circular trimmers, about three string trimmer attachments, and the only think I noticed was we still had to do enough by hand that we were only added a much more strenuous task by not just attacking it with the steak knife in the first place. This could be soil dependent of course.

Like many things, there isn't always a better mouse trap.

I like the TAS Trimmers. You can get them through Precision and R&R.

I've had decent success with the head edger in the past -

You will need to spend some time getting to grips with it before you start trying to trim heads in high-profile areas because despite what the informational video says, the unit will bounce. I have found that tilting the weedeater to the left and easing it down over the head is the best way to trim without bounce.

Also the teeth will last far longer if you are able to trim heads on a regular basis.

We use linoleum knives here. I've used the plactic ones for weedeaters before but they wear out way to fast or break easily if you don't get them over the head just right. I'd like to see a simple machine designed where you could push down once and get a perfect trim on any sprinkler.

thanks everyone for all of your advice. I will be buying a an attachment from Miltona for the reciprocator,
    a TAS trimmer
    a head edger
and a case of the plastic powerheads.

if I dont like them then we go back to manual.

I do think a lot of these are operator dependent as well as dependent on soil and frequency of use.
