At a low budget golf course with no nursery green and not enough money for a sod purchase. We need to patch about 1000 sq ft of dead grass on a green. Does anyone have any experience cutting their own sprigs and planting them? if so what method did you use. Can it be done by setting a verti-cutter low enough to pull out springs? I grew in all of my greens with sprigs originally so I know it can be done, just trying to find an inexpensive solution.

If it's only 1000ft2, I'd strip sod or plugs off the putting green and place them in the area. No cost and either way you are still growing in two areas.

We did some "sprigging" last year on a practice green that we were converting from bent to bermuda using the cores from aerifying other bermuda greens. When you spread it out it breaks the cores up good, throw a little topdressing over the top, fertilize, and start the water up. We learned years ago that where ever we dumped bentgrass cores they would thrive, usually better than they did while they were part of the green.
