The word softspikes is a misnomer. Might as well be using football cleats.

From what I learned from writing about this subject a couple months ago, many people do not like these new soft spikes or waffle shoes, as I hate what they do to the greens after they soften from rains. Talking with other people and shoe reps, it sounds like these shoes are going to become the standard. If the golfers like them...who cares what the people that take care of and keep the courses looking the way they do. Maybe we can start a petition.

why don't we have control on these shoes. I can see a good golf will, take the time and walk right , what about the bad golfer who just wants to look good. we need to go back to steel spikes. I also know about club houses and all the damage they cause, What are we that lazy to take them off. You take your shoes off at home ????? Why is this going on ? why cant we stand up for ourselves

They should go back to the short 4mm steel spikes. But, if you look at the young players on TOUR and NCAA events and how hard they swing, the new shoes are made for them.

I would agree with the above we saw several who wear some of these new type do more harm than good! The others complain about these marks around the cup wanting to know if these are legal golf shoes allowed on the greens. It is becoming another over the top issue of discussion on the course, just like golf ball distance control, golf club distance control issues...As long as the makers of the products make large amounts of money and push their ideology upon the players they control the game....where is the USGA on this??? Silence of the Lamb? PGA cares not their guys make money selling the products!! Just my opinion...

Steve I agree, and have posted this before about standing up against the aggressive soft spikes, the only thing i can think of is to to send e-mails to the USGA, GCSAA, and PGA about our spike concerns. I have done this, and hope others do the same. I have also talked to our clubs shoe reps about my main concern, which is the damage around the hole and it's effect on ball roll

GCSAA should not have a stance on it, IMHO.

    Q. How did softspikes finally become the norm?

A . Golf courses told members/the public they couldn't wear metal any longer. Shoe companies took note.

Maybe we could try that again?

    OK, who's gonna' go first?

See thier pushing the adidas shoe this week @ Torrey Pines It pisses me off to no end we work our ass off to give smooth putting surfaces, even having to combat certain anouncers who talk about grain and bumpy poa, then shoe companies can build whatever shoe they want with no regard to turf injury. Fred Couples and many others play pretty good golf on the shoe he wears.

Tell your members/the public they can't wear them. Buy some metal spikes to have in the pro shop and offer to change them out. That's what everybody did when going from metal to soft 20 years ago, or whenever it was.

Can't blame the shoe/spike companies, in my opinion. They're just trying to sell more shoes.
