    What number do you all use to convert cubic yards to tons?

    I've gone as high as 1.7 if it is wet, which most of our sand is since it comes from the bottom of a lake.

    Build a box wooden 12"X 12"X 12" weight it empty and then fill it and take just the weight of the sand times 27 and do this every time you order sand, You sand company cannot fight you then. Also get some of your sand dry and weight it and then wet it as much as you can and you will see all the conditions that sand comes in. In parts of Asia I have had to check each load of sand to confirm the loads by weight.

    I use this to measure area:

    www.acme.com/planimeter

    This will tell you how much material you need:

    I don't know if this helps but it sure makes life easier.

    Sorry, this is the math:

    Estimate Material Tonnage
    The formula for estimating how much sand, gravel or greensmix you'll need is:

    * Area in square feet x desired depth in feet = Cubic Feet
    * Cubic feet divided by 27 = Cubic Yards
    * Cubic yards x 1.35 = Tons
    * Tons x (100% + percentage needed for waste) = tons required

    An extra 10% of mix is usually added for waste and error in measuring.
