Has anyone used potassium permanganate in their irrigation system to clean out the protozoa in the lines? Were there any adverse side effects on the turf?

    Thanks in advance

Yes, we use it regularly. Put it in the wet well, go out to 3 or 4 of your furthest points from the pumpstation, run the water until you see purple. Let it sit in the lines for a day or two if possible. Be prepared for a few stuck ons after, as the debris comes lose and may clog the heads. We try to use it more preventative than curative to avoid issues.

When dealing with protozoa we have find preventative is a much better approach than curative.

Worked in Las Vegas for 5 years and used the product every year with no side effects to bermuda or rye. Only thing we did different from Wally is we ran it up to every head as it is an expensive product so we wanted to ensure it was all through every lateral. Good Luck, that stuff is not fun.

Use it have too. Be careful not to get it on homeowners property. It can stain. Solution of hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar will clean up most of it.

We do the same process of getting it into as many heads as we can.
