Details.... Southern Illinois... L-93 bent sod laid October of last year on Greens... the "greens" sod was purchased and was told it would be 1/8 to 1/4 tall.... it was at least a 1/2" .... 3000 sq. Ft. Total spread out over 6 different greens....not knowing exactly where the surface would ultimately be when the height would be reduced.....I decided to lay it conservatively lower with the thoughts topdress ing it up a little ....when all was said and done it was probably1/4 low, which kinda looks out of place in the smaller sections of sod, not so much overall I the larger spots...after spring aerification we buried the sod one final time sand up to green height..... well im starting to wonder what the best case scenario is now.... I have probably 3/4" of sand above the crown of the plant and am curious if this is a recipe for disaster once June hits Or will it start to thatch up and gain density????? Or do I just continue to mow the grass and sand up from it everyday until it reaches a middle ground, or do i blow/firehose as much sand off it as o can and start mowing it at the crown until the fall when a sod cutter can raise it...??? I know im kinda all over the place on this but I really would like this sod to live this year. I just don't know if having that much sand on top of grass blades is a good idea.... Thank you for any insight

To bury the crown of the turf is a plan for disaster down the road, especially in the transition zone when temperature gets very hot in the air and in the ground. I am from the Maryland/Virginia area and my many grow in new golf course experience tells me to help you with my opinion. JMO

if it were me, we laid 3 greens worth of sod in the fall and all we could get was tee height (1/2"). Install it at green level and work it down by starting high and lowering the height with a walk mower until you reach greens height. obviously continual topdressing to raise the surface slowly and meet somewhere in the middle.

I once took some rough sod where at some time someone had dumped aerifying plugs scalped it in half to one inch then moved it to our chipping green and sanded heavy.I then lowered the mower every couple days until green height.
