Ive asked about this a year ago or so and had mixed results, so ill ask again.........
Has anyone had good results with any of the ground penetrating radar companies and their abilities to locate greens drains effectively?
    Thanks

Don't know about companies, but we have one ourselves and use it all the time to find irrigation and drainage. Works like a champ in our soils down to about 12'. Also finds rocks, stumps, buried logs.....

Also very keen to hear more on the manufacturer. We're continually finding old pipe under our course which is 115 years old.

    Thanks.

Works good. If you don't want to buy one check with an golf course irrigation installer.

After checking with our utility department, the cost was close to $10,000 for the demo unit we bought. The brand is MALA. He did also state that if you are a member of a utility association(ours being a Florida association), they might have equipment they loan to members. So, prior to purchasing our own unit, for the $100 annual membership fee, we could borrow their cart when needed. We just got to the point where we were keeping the loaner unit for months on end and ended up just buying our own cart. But, since getting the cart, it has saved us several thousands of dollars just on the golf courses alone.

The website for the system we bought is http://www.malags.com/Home. Ours is the ProEX with the rough terrain cart.

I would try Googling "Ground Penetrating Radar Rental" and see if you can find something nearby. You might find something like this http://www.malags.com/Products/ground-penetrating-radar-equipment-rental.

Andy do you have a map that you could email to show what this machine is capable of providing in terms of accuracy etc?
    Thank you

Don't know if I can do a map, but I can take a screen shot of the screen when it hovers over something buried. Give me a day or so and I will get something up.

I "played" with a radar unit here at UMD. The equipment was purchased by our arboretum for tree inspections. A non-invasive way to detect tree decay. An option was a tricycle-like cart allowing ground inspection for tree roots. I took it across the street to the golf course to do exactly what you are describing. It did not work too well with plastic pipe. Plastic pipe filled with water showed up but not most drain pipe under the green. Irrigation lines showed up.This equipment penetrated 1 meter. Interesting stuff. The equipment cost UMD $25K about 3 years ago. The manufacturer is local here in MD. http://www.treeradar.com/RootsInspection.htm Exciting stuff. We have used it to route some new sidewalks here on campus away from the critical root zone of trees which is what it was designed for. I am sure wavelengths could be "tweaked" to find pipe, ours is looking for "moist wood." Tracer wire at installation is still the way to go. Kenneth Ingram, UMD
