Waste bunker yes or no

Hello, The club GM has proposed a waste bunker to deter drives from entering adjoining holes, 10 and 18.

It would be about 125 yards long with varying width considering what is visible from the tees and the area necessary to really stop them from aiming for fairway 18 instead of 10 and also what is visually attractive for the clubhouse terrace.

Also it is to physically stop leaking drives from 18 from entering fairway 10. Golfers do not intentionally aim for the 10th fairway as they do from the 10th to the 18th.

Any and all comments would be appreciated, I have mapped it out according to criteria above. Shallow and firm maybe with some small chunks of tall fescue.

    Thanks Michael

Hi Michael, maybe worth going to Almería, Desert Springs golf club. They are surrounded with waste area's and not so far from your area. Nice examples over there.
    Best Regards,
    Marco

    Hi Marco,

Thanks for reply. I have been many times to Desert Springs working with Anthony to solve water quality issues with the greens. I have played the course and had my only lost ball of the day stay up in a palm tree inside one of the waste bunkers.

I am not concerned with building the waste bunker or its design. I´m concerned about how it will affect play, more maintenance than expected. This area has 10 olive trees in a jagged line separating the 2 fairways. 6 or 7 of these olives will be in the waste bunker.

    Un saludo Michael

We have two waste bunkers here at Sewanee and they require a ton of maintenance to look good. The sand is constantly washing and blowing. All those little fescue islands add up to man hours.
