We had a power interruption late last week which the transfer switch on our genset did not function properly. Our five yo VFD got toasted. No surge protectors tripped all seemed fine except for the $8000 VFD. Anyone had experience with this. It's difficult telling the board that our new state of the art pump station had significant damage.
The pump station also runs the fire control for our new clubhouse so a genset was mandatory for us to install and has been a blessing since we often have power failures. I guess too many trees in nearby high end village and they often blow down...thanks

We've lost two out of three vfd's in the past two years to lightning strikes or "stray voltage". Both have been returned to ABB for analysis and supporting paperwork returned. Sucks to have to replace drives because of this but that's what insurance is for. I'm hopeful that ABB will develop some sort of "protection device" but then again, why not sell another drive?
We're fortunate to have a "drive expert" on call and can have us up and running in 24 hours.

I have a Siemens VFD that was specified by my utilities department. I was told it was worth $10,000 and would go eventually. We installed it in 2002. The cooling fan has failed three times causing the thing to overheat and shut down. We use the Power Cat Blower with the hose attachment that fits perfectly over the fan housing.
