    Ladies and Gentlemen,

While at the GIS this past week, I did some pretty extensive shopping for triplex replacements. I was pretty aware what the big 3 had to offer, but stopped and looked at both Baroness, and R & R's models as well. The drawing factor to the R&R unit was the similarity to Toro's 3100 and 3150 machines (for gas anyway), and the price tag. Although I didn't get a chance to see it in action, nor did a salesman attempt to make a sale, I was rather intrigued.

My quesiton to you all who have or have not purchased, demoed, or used them is: What are the reviews? I'm specifically shopping to replace an older 3050 used to mow tee tops and approaches. Although I will get pricing on others as well, it just seems these units are pretty good for the price tag, and look and felt user friendly.

I appreciate any replies on the good or negative spectrum. Shipping from their source to me may be an issue, but not the sole source in decision making. Our entire fleet is Red at this point, and the operator similarities could be quite beneficial. Thanks in advance.

I have seen several Baroness demos and was very impressed. Talking with owners of the walkers they say the steel in the reals is far superior than any of the others. Very little grinding or lapping needed. If in the market I would definitely give them a chance.

We have 3 of the R&R push pedal tri-plexes here and we use them for t-c-a's and around our putting greens, crouquet areas. We mow 3-5 times a week on 27 holes in Southwest florida. I love them! For the price they simply can not be beat IMO. Ours have a 2year warranty that covers everything! Now, having said all of this...the reels are very brittle and break away from the webbing rather eaily compared to a Toro reel. Other than that, I will buy again.

My next important question will regard their hydraulic motors. I am assuming, can't remember, that the hookups are unique to themselves, and that the ability to changout another chassis with interchangable cassettes would require some configuring, and isn't a simple slap it in situation like all toro triplexes seem to have. Although, it seems to me, they are altering things from hydraulics to cutting units as well.

As far as the reel durability, when replacing a damaged reel, since R&R is a non original parts manufacturer, they probably are the only ones making replacement reels, etc?

As far as I know everything is interchanable with Toro. In fact I think the pumps and motors are made by the same company that makes them for Toro (dont hold me to that). If I had to do it over again knowing what I know now, I would buy the R&R traction unit and stick toro cutting units on it. They warranty the reels so it no big deal... But as far as I can tell they are identical units (exept color). We swap cutting units, rollers v-cutters, spikers and parts between these units and our older Toros with no issues.

It is hard to decide which mowers to buy. We are primarily John Deere and I really like these mowers. We used to use Toro 3100 and I really liked them as well. I still have them and they have 4,600 hours and 6,500 hours on them and are still capable of mowing. My advice to you would be to choose the mower that you know you will get the best service and parts from, nothing worse then having a mower sitting because you are waiting on service or parts. We are only 10 minutes from our Deere distributor. I like the Toros and Jacobsen is on a comeback and they have great mowers.
As for the R&R, they are the Toro 3050 (cable steering, R&R 1860) and the Toro 3100 (power steering, R&R 1860PS). I presume the patent was up on these models and R&R bought the rights to reproduce them. If you look in the catalog and compare, all the parts are the same as the Toro parts, the only difference in the mowers is that they are now green. I fully agree with Curtis about the reels, we had the same problem with our reels when we used them, but we bought the 8 blade heavy duty from R&R and they held up better then the standard 8 blade, but still not as strong as the Toro reels.

    Good Luck
