We have a written systematic means of training employees on equipment. Field training is done by the Assistant or Foreman. We do not expect them to accomplish anything their first day or two, except #1 do not hurt themselves or anyone else and #2 do not damage anything. The first thing we train them to do is STOP!
I once asked an experienced operator to train someone on a piece of equipment. This person was never meant to take responsibility for the actions of others and was a nervous wreck. I did not catch it right away and he nearly quit a job he had for 15 years.
