Anybody got TifEagle on collars? Is it on mix? What's your HOC?
or am I just being foolish?

    Steve,

The Ritz-Carlton Member's Club in Sarasota has TifEagle collars and "bail-out" areas(for the lack of a better term). I played it last January 2014 and they played great, but you could see the greensmowers had a hard time finding the edges when mowing.

Thanks Andy. I hadn't thought about that, just trying to figure out what we're gonna do when we rebuild. I'm beginning to think this might not be such a great idea, but having gotten burned with Champion, I'm trying to come up with a strategy to try to maintain a pure stand and keep encroachment at bay. I was thinking that it might be easier to cut encroachment out of the collars than the green, but I'm thinking you may have to cut the collars at .25"

Steve my old-time Michigan friend, how are you? Hope all is well! We just did our West course last year with TifGrand and just finished up the East course this month with the same. Nice color, plays well, and seems to hold up very well through the summer heat. The new ones we are already being mowed @400 and the ones from last year I want to say he has them down like 230 to 240 range.

    Regards,

    Skip

PS, I'll look you up when I get down there, hopefully sometime this fall

Hey Skip. I will look forward to the visit. I have heard that TifGrand is very nice but also pretty aggressive with regard to encroachment. I think that would be my second choice, though.

Has anyone tried Tifgreen for collars? It doesn't like the lower mowing heights which might keep encroachment to a minimum.

That's what they said about 419 too, but I've got a boatload of that in my greens. I think that encroachment is just a fact of life, you manage it as long as you can. I'm just thinking that if I can manage it in the collars instead of on the green surface, it might be easier on us.
I could also be full of baloney.

    Steve,
I am entering my third season with TifGrand on my collars. My members have said it was the best project that I have ever done. I read your concern on encroachment and wanted to let you know that we have seen NO encroachment of the TifGrand on to the TifEagle greens. We have some coming into the TifGrand from the outside, but you are going to have that with anything you choose. The color is great, the wear tolerance is great and the ability to handle our Primo rates has been terrific. I know Bob at Boca Rio converted his to TifGrand this summer.

I had Tifgreen fairways/collars in Lodi, CA from 1990-1994. Had zero encroachment problems into Pennlinks greens, at least back then.

Up until 2013, we had tifeagle collars and approaches at Pine Tree. Though really cool, playability wise, we had to use yellow dots all winter long to see the cleanup edge and also identify if a ball was on a green or not, for marking purposes. After a marking issue during the club championship, they were switched out that summer.
We used boards year round to minimize suppression of the collar and maintained at .250". It wouldn't grow any higher and we never mow any turf off the collars in the winter months. They were installed originally to minimize encroachment, or when it occurred, it was in the collars, not the green.
