I am interested in building a forward set of tees on my course for use by juniors or beginners. I manage a public golf course with very little junior play and would like to try and build a better Junior Golf Program by providing an easier set up for them. My current forward/ladies set of tees plays 5112 yards and is still a little long for young players who hit a decent ball. How far do you think the average 8-12 year old hits their tee ball? I thought if I could come up with this number, I could place the tees accordingly to provide them with a shot that would correlate to a tee ball hit by the average golfer from the regular men's tee? I was thinking this yardage would provide them with positive feedback while still maintaining the architects vision for the golf hole. Does anyone have any feed back on what type of yardage this new forward set of tees should play based on the abilities of your junior golfers?
    Thanks, Chris

We installed the PGA family tees a few years back. The distance range is from 2159-5206. Our score card can be seen at http://www.moccasincreekcc.com click on Golf at the Club.

We installed U.S. Kids Golf family tee markers both level 1 and 2. Our level 2 yardage is 3653 and level 1 yardage is 2066. The program has a range of yardages for Par 5's, 4's and 3's. If I could find the original e-mail that we used when we set up ours I would have the ranges.

I know our Par 5's range from 322 to 299 for level 1 and level two are 173 to 182.

Our Par 4's range from 248 to 186 for level 1 and 136 to 90 yards for level 2

Our Par 3's for level 1 are 78 to 115 yards with our level 2 are 62 to 55 yards.

Our Pro Shops are supposed to have score cards made, (haven't seen them yet these past two years) Our pro does use them for Jr. Leagues and lessons.

Did the US kids tee set-up as well with little round discs in the ground, works great and the juniors love it, however the only problem I have with the markers is that is one more thing on the course we have to trim around.

We have 7 sets of tees on one of our courses-Pine Lakes. During the course design Clyde Johnston incorporated "Family Friendly" tee boxes, making it one of the First courses in America that allows players of all ages to compete evenly. Due to these tee boxes, Jekyll Island is the official host of the annual US Kids Golf Jekyll Island Cup every March.

    Championship Blue 6700 yards
    Men's White 6303 yards
    Seniors Gold 5810 yards
    Junior Purple 5321 yards
    Ladies Red 4975 yards
    Junior Yellow 3497 yards
    Junior Green 1786 yards

Thanks for the input. So my next question is... Were all of your pros the ones in charge of getting the markers and coming up with the best locations for them, or were you given the markers and left to your own discretion on where to put them? I tried to find them on the Internet yesterday to get an idea of what they would cost and had no success. We just got a new Director of Golf and Head Pro. I'm sure they are very busy and this would be one more thing to add to their plate. The Junior Tees were my idea and I don't want to step on any Pro Shop Staff toes.

The Pro here set it all up and had his assistants install the round discs. They also have the bag kids go out and clean around them on occasion. They use these markers on a regular basis for the First Tee Program and other Junior events.

    Chris,

We have 3 city courses with the tees, we did have the tees donated by the local Jr. Assoc. We (maintenance) were given the markers to install.

I don't know who decided how they were located at our one course but the results were that they installed them at either their 250, 200, 150, 100 yard markers. At our facility I took the responsibility to figure yardages and install, we also keep them edged. At the third course I don't think they have been installed yet, but I think their reasoning is they have a nine hole par 3 course as well.

The one thing we did not do was to build extra tees, if on some of the par 3's it worked, we would put a marker on a forward tee, otherwise all markers were installed in the fairways. We did made corresponding yardage post to mark the locations.

Our Junior Tees were designed by the architect and constructed during our renovations.
