We have a new pump station that uses two wells to direct feed the irrigation system. One well is capable of pumping 300 gpm of water, while the other is capable of pumping 700 gpm. We keep getting a fault code on our large well. This is the 3rd motor that we have gone through in a short period of time, all have been warrantied.

The well is 400 feet deep, the pump and motor sit at 180 feet down. We did have a blockage in the well that was cleared up, and we also increased our wire size out to the well itself at the recommendation of the manufacturer.

We are only pumping 700 gpm peak at night. So between the two wells there should be plenty of water available.

First does anyone else draw directly from a well to the course? If so have you ever experienced a similar issue and what was the fix.

    Greg,
How old is your well and has it ever been acid or sap treated? Your screen may be clogged and need to be cleaned to get to that volume of water the pump is specked at.

    Dan,

Well is about a year old. 3rd motor that we have had.

-after second motor we re-drilled the well in case of a blockage, we also ran a larger wire to the well pump due to the distance from the pump house.

Just looking for ideas before we throw another $20,000 "test" motor in the well.

Our service contractor does annual testing for output of the pump and checking the power supply and amp draws for the motor. We pay them well to do this to be sure our system is as good as it can be. We have two 50 hp that pump over 500 gpm each and a 15 hp jockey. All three wells are just over 100 feet deep with the big pumps set about 90 feet and the jockey pump at 60 feet.

To me it sounds like a power issue. Before re drilling did you send a camera down? Our contractor does this, for a fee, but can help diagnose well issues.

Why are these submersible and not turbine? Seems like a long way for the power to run at that amperage.

What is the fault code and what is burning up the motors?

Is there a possibility that the well is being sucked dry? Have you run a draw-down test?

I have seen this all happen....we have over 50 wells on property with about 20 or so as high service. Most are in the 400' range with pumps sitting anywhere from 180-240'. The rest are agricultural wells sitting at about 100' below surface. We get lots of faults.

Can you GPM output be greater than your Pump GPM output? If you have VFD drives can they be telling the pump to pump more to keep up with GPM requirement and as a result you keep burning them up.?.?
