    Is anyone using the Duration CR fertilizer for bulk spread apps. I am considering using this for my bulk app. on bermudagrass. Planning on putting out 2#N. Any information on this product would be helpful.

    Johnathan,

    I've been using both Polyon and Duration for many years now. They are the bulk of any application we apply. Last year, we applied three bulk applications to our golf course here in Central Florida at a total of 5.2#N/m for the entire year. Our last application in 2011 was in July and contained a 120 day Polyon product. We didn't apply any other product after that. I can attest that when they say it will turn off at a certain point, you better have your next application lined up.

    This year, we've already applied a 120 day product in February at 1.75#N/m, and will be applying a 180 day product in May at a rate of 3#N/m. The May application will carry me into late October, early November. I have seen the results from these products and will continue to use them. For me, I am seeing a savings over traditional fertilizer as well as application costs to apply product on three golf courses. The steady feed and consistent nutrient availability is what I am after. They are also better for the environment since they do not release more than what the plant can take up at one time.

    Hey Andy,

    What would be your thoughts regarding using Fertigation as your main source of fertility (except greens). Over the past few years, I have really lessened the use of granulars. My current program that I have followed the past couple of years includes;

    Spray all insecticide and preemerge applications
    3 wall to wall 6-3-0 Organic (100% slow-release) apps. in March, April, & Nov @ .75#N
    Tees & Weak Areas receive supplemental granular apps (Mostly ammonium sulfate) as needed
    Tees & Fairways are sprayed every 3 weeks in growing season (fertilizer & primo)
    Fertigation is used weekly
    **All K is supplied via fertigation and spray applications

    Overall, this has worked rather well. But I am now questioning if I even need to do the three bulk Organic apps. Aside from supplemental apps. to weak areas, could you just rely on Fertigation to supply all your fertility needs?

    Chris,

    We do supplement with fertigation, but typically only during the times that we are overseeded. Traditionally, two of our granular applications also contained Ronstar. This year we blew it in, so no need to combine with a fert application. I think fetigiation is the only true source of controlled release fertilizer, as you control the growth 100%. But, my only negative opinion of fertigation is that once the rains settle in during the summer, we aren't running much irrigation and therefore wouldn't be running any fertigation. We do apply 2-0-12 when we can through the summer, as the granular typically does not include a coated K product. Also, our irrigation system isn't 100% wall to wall, and we have the need to still hit some outer areas with a long-term granular product.

    I would love to do a few bio solid apps throughout the year. And although we do use it quite a bit, our members hate the smell. Your program looks to be very solid and consistent. I would still think you would want to put out the organic though to feed the soil and provide a base. The whole idea of the polymer coated products is to reduce labor, and I think they achieve that goal for us. Since fertigation requires minimal labor, I think you are achieving the same goal, just a different way.
