I was wondering if anyone has heard of spraying laundry detergent in bunkers to firm them up? What were the results, rates and how often is it needed?

I've never heard of that, but would be curious to know if anyone has tried it. We get the same complaints, especially in the dry season when the bunkers get fluffy very quickly. We used to rake daily with a machine, and have since reduced our frequency and removed the tines from the rakes. This seemed to have helped as the complaints have all but disappeared.

The older generations of soil penitents work well. They were pretty close to laundry soap.

Zekez, there are a couple courses in my area (Palm Springs) that do it to actually clean them up. It is funny to say, but Tide with Bleach does a wonderful job on the light colored sands and helps get rid of the some of the surface scum if you don't rake your fairways everyday. In general it does clean them up a bit. As far as compaction, in additional to physical methods like plate tamping or rolling (bigger bunkers) I have used some wetting agents that aid in dispersing water throughout the sand profile to get them almost to field capacity (eyeballed) and then run the tamper or roller through. Other than that....time, which never seems to be the right answer for members.

I never tried myself but do remember years ago a Superintendent using powered limestone to both whiten and firm up soft sand.

Gas powered Plate tamps work great at least for green side bunkers (not enough time/money for fwy bunkers). H20 with hose first, then tamp. More work but lasting results. We try and do it every winter at least once.
