Anyone have experience with long distance shipping (north to the south).

What to look for in a company and how to arrange for loading.

curious as to what to expect if I bought used from up north.

I am in Ohio, and we have bought several pieces of equipment from the south. I have used a local company for some of our shipments, I have used logistic company recommended by dealer, and I have used UShip.com. I have found that it is best use local companies. It depends a lot on what you are shipping. Call around to local logistic companies, but have all the dimensions and weight for the items being shipped so that they can give you an accurate estimate. I have used UShip before and it worked out good a couple times, and was worthless a couple other times. This past time I used it I posted all the equipment along with dimensions and had several companies bid on the job and I accepted their offer, then when they were going to pick up load they asked me for all the items or got there and said everything would not fit on their trailer. After finding out items would not fit on trailer, they wanted more money even after they already agreed on what was listed. Local logistic company worked out best and was cheaper. If you do not need the item tomorrow, most logistic companies have loads going all over the place and looking for other items to fill their trailers going in specific direction.
What are you looking to haul and approximately where in the north is the pickup and where in the south is delivery? I could give you the number of some of the companies I use from Ohio, but they are travelling down south quite often.

Check for how it's going to be unloaded. Nothing worse than a fairway mower showing up on a flatbed semi with no way to unload it.

Thanks guys, I'm currently looking at Toro 3100 sidewinders. getting it on or off a rig is my concern currently. I know I can pick it up with my backhoe but I do not think I can get the bucket high enough to get it off of a rig. since I have an old one I may give it a try and see how high I can get it. I can have the front reels removed in order to make it a little easier to work with from the front though. I cannot expect a shipping company to have ramps though. I could build a dirt ramp that a truck can back up to though. I would just need to height of the rig.

Ask your Toro dealer how it comes on a pallet to them. I see it only weights 2100#'s and should be able to be picked with a regular fork lift on the side of the unit if it is put on a pallet. Maybe you can even get a used 3500 shipping pallet from a Toro distributorship which is the exact size. Toro uses several 3" wide ratcheting straps to hold it to the pallet. It would be much cheaper to ship it in an a enclosed semi trailer with a trucking company. You are going to pay premium if you have it shiped on a flat bed semi unless someone is headed your way with no load.

Ask your Toro dealer to send you a picture of a 3500 on the pallet. You will get a good sense of the best way to ship it.

Fastenal ships freight for a reasonable price compared to regular freight companies between Fastenal Dealers. You have to be able to get it to a Fastenal dealer and pick it up at a Fastenal dealer. It also depends on how fast you need it. Fastenal is using the empty space they are not using themselves on their trucks to haul your freight.

I know in the past, Global Turf has used carriers that use car hauling trailers. They have also palletized equipment when needed. All depends on what you need. Rates will reflect accordingly.
