Some of our older golfers have asked us to develop a senior tee on the golf course. This will be done by dividing the course between our forward tees (red) and our second set of tees (blue) and creating a new yardage line on the scorecard. We will also have the new tee setup evaluated for handicap purposes. I suggested that we mark the new tee locations at the same location as the corresponding red or blue tee by having one of the markers on the tee be red and the other marker be white. I also suggested that we could paint the markers with half of it being white and the other half being red. This idea outraged some of the seniors saying that they will not play from a red tee marker.
I am trying to get away with not adding a entire new set of tee markers to the golf course for maintenance purposes. I tried to explain the tee rotation for divots, the time it takes to move tee markers, fill divots, pick up broken tees, and moving markers for mowing, but it fell on def ears.
I am looking for ways that other courses mark a combination tee, or a senior tee at there facility. Any info would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

The old timers wanted their own tee markers a couple years ago. I suggested to them to play from the forward tees which are stereotyped ladies and are red. Just as your members are they wouldn't do it. We made a half dozen yellow sets of markers, we use the log types, and placed them on the holes that are to long for them. They sat there the whole year with barely any use. Fast forward a year.

We removed all the yellow sets and painted the reds half yellow. I'd say half the old timers play from them now. It took several months before they came around and let their ego go. If you have small tees you could tell them there isn't enough room between the sets for an additional marker and that the extra marker isn't going to leave enough room to properly rotate the other sets. I'd get your boss on your side and just let them bitch. If thats all they can find to complain about things must be good.

Last year, some of our older members complained about the senior tees being too long on some of the holes. These were guys that usually play at least 3 times per week. Of course, they did not want to hear of teeing off from the Ladies tees! :P
At first, I was opposed to the idea of another set of tee markers, especially since we have small tees. However, it's a small gesture to keep golfers happy without too much extra effort on our part. We added a set of silver tee markers behind our ladies markers...many of them on the same teebox as the ladies. We call them the Super Senior tees. They love them, and even gripe when we take them off the forward tees. Heaven forbid they hit from the ladies tee markers, but hitting from a set of silver tees 5 yards behind them...no problem! Go figure.
We are planning on adding them to the scorecard, next time we order more.

Our forward (ladies) tees used to play 5800 yards. Since we needed to shorten up the course to about 5300 yards for the ladies we thought that we would add an additional set of blocks and use many of the existing forward tees for our seniors. We even tried to mess with their minds by moving the white blocks up to the senior tees and adding a set of yellow blocks where the whites originally used to be. For the most part the addition of the extra blocks didn't work. The seniors still refuse to play from "the ladies" tees and complain that our contoured mowing gets further away from the tees every year.

It is typical to make Senior tees gold, solves color issues, as they get their own color. We use this on ours on some longer holes the red tees are half red/gold. No issues or complaints that I know of and card has its own gold line...

We just re-opened our back nine after the 1st phase of a renovation which included adding a set of senior tees. The seniors love them, but now the ladies and men are bitching because they think the seniors have an unfair advantage in tournaments and in our weekend money game. Gotta love it!

When I was at the City of Gilroy G.C., we changes the colors of the tee markers. Instead of Red and calling them the ladies tees, we changed the color to Green and called it the forward tee markers for the front nine. On the back nine we left the tee markers yellow, but called them the forward tees. The whites remained the front nine back tees and we changed the Blue tee markers to Black for the back tees. Once the changes were made, a lot of the golfers young and old started to play on the forward tees and made play a bit quicker. What a color change can do.

Fascinating, this human ego thing. Do they think when they are dead, which most likely will be soon, that someone will remember they tee'd off from a red, not a gold marker, placed in the exact same spot?

I think the problem is that tee markers are placed so that drives end up in the same place. They should be placed so that the approach shots are comparable. Hitting a 3-wood into a green designed for a nine-iron shot cannot be fun.

I think we tend to forget the golden rule; Our members are OUR customers and they pay the bills. If setting out an extra set of T markers is what they want so be it, it's a minor inconvenience. I plan on being one of those members one day and would expect nothing less.

I installed a set of senior tees after fighting my board for over five years. they simply did not care about the old farts, now that they are old farts they are happy that they gave into my fight.

I was able to do something totally different with the colors though. for some reason our regular tees where white with blue being our back tees. we added a set of gold tees for the back and move all of the rest up so the seniors got to continue playing from the white tees. I fought the same battle of the ego as most of you seem to be doing and simply told them that they do not have toplay from the senior tees, our handicapping system will take care of the issue. simply put you do not like it play back at the other tees, I will not change it because the other people that are using them think it is fair and have no problem.

I did have to use split markers for some tees and the seniors had to play from some of the ladies tees. Without building all new tee boxes it was the only way.

fast forward to now, we have installed a set of ladies senior tees which I have painted breast cancer pink.

If I was to do it all over again I would set out to correct all of my tees for all types of members. If I am building a set of senior tees I would do it for the senior ladies also. When we set the yardage for the tees we kept in mind how far the average senior hits the ball and wanted their first shot hitting into the landing zone where the first hazards lay. I would then cut my fairways so these first shots would most likely fall from the golfers that hit the ball the shortest distance. I have some seniors that hit drivers less the 150 yds and do not want to penalize them on their first shot with a shot in the rough before the fairway. These golfers are here for the fun and love of the game and not for the competition aspect of the game. I want to keep the game fun for them also.

Get a few of the golfers on your side as to the combination tee issue and do not listen to the rest. Most of the complainers are complaining because they want another advantage over the shorter hitters. Some of our longest drivers are seniors and they can pretty much drive with anyone in the club but they also get to use the senior tees, is this an unfair advantage in some ways yes but when they are 70-80yrs old and can still drive the ball that far I will not argue with them.
