Seeded Bermuda...Riviera?

We have an upcoming project that will require regrassing a fairly large area between three holes. We are going to resod everything in play with 419, but the funds are not there to sod everything. So, I'm looking at possibly seeding an improved bermuda variety (Riviera?), or establishing a natural area.

My question is which improved seeded bermuda variety would you choose? or which ones of the newer varieties have you had good results with? I've read and heard that Riviera is the closest to 419, but wanted to see what others thought. Thanks!

Are you sodding due to time limitations? If not, I would sprig everything with 419. You can push it very hard. I have had excellent success using Ronstar with sprigs. I don't know about Riviera. It might be completely compatible with 419, but I would think all 419 would be preferable.

    Scott,
Plan to sod the higher profile areas and slopes, but not out of play where the majority of the disruption will be. Still considering sprigging...just curious about these newer seeded varieties.
What is the timing of your Ronstar apps? About how much are 419 sprigs per bushel now? Thanks.

I haven't grown Princess or Riviera myself but I have seen them both used near 419. The average person on the street could not distinguish them from 419. They both look very good and would blend nicely. If we ever can increase our water supply to the point of having adequate water all summer, I would like to improve our roughs. All options will be on the table, including those seeded varieties.

I think Riviera is too nice and dense for roughs. Also, Riviera is not cheap. $16.50/lb at 2 lb/M is $1400 or so an acre while sprigging is around $1500 (I'm out of the loop on prices nowadays) I think you have the right idea about seeding out of play areas but maybe think about other, coarser varities that may be cheaper. And if these are natural areas the sky is the limit on grass choices. I know Mike Richarson at AK could give you some great ideas. Most folks up here in MD are trying to kill muda grass this time of year. Good luck. Kenneth Ingram, UMD.

Thanks for the replies. I had considered just seeding common bermuda, but really want to find something similar in density and texture to the surrounding 419 if we go back with turf. As far as seeding a natural area, I purchased a blend from my supplier several years ago that has turned out better than I expected. It was a mixture of side oats grama and little bluestem with a little switchgrass thrown in. Also, had hard fescue as cover crop. I'll contact Mike at Arkansas to get his thoughts on other blends as well.

How late in the season have you applied ronstar?

Bermuda triangle is a nice blend that we are looking at for roughs. Was ready for play in 45 days. First mow at 24 days.

Contact Doug Miller at Pennington seed in Oregon, Princess is the best bermudagrass seed overall IMHO. Testimonials all over the web. Good luck. dmiller@penningtonseed.com

How tolerant is Riviera to MSMA? How soon after seed break can you apply?

    Thanks,
