We just aerified Monday and Tuesday. I verti-cut in front of the aerifier down and back. Verticuts were set with a straight bar with the blades just nicking the bar. We pulled cores but they were .300 id. I am getting some scalping when we are mowing dry this afternoon. Mower is set at .125. I pulled the mower off and going to backlap before it goes back out. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Charlie B.

You should get a Vertigauge. Vertigauge.com.

In areas on the green where your grain is the worst the plant will be lifted up more after verticutting, therefore causing scalping in these area's. We actually triplex after verticutting instead of walkmowing with the machine set at the same height as walkers which effectively is .005" higher and we rarely scalp. We verticut, blow, triplex and topdress in that order once a week. I hope that helps. My only other thought is to switch to solid rollers to mow after verticutting.

I always have to raise my HOC up to .150" from .125 on my TifEagle Greens after aerifying or else they will scalp. then we roll them daily to get them smooth again where we can start going back down.

Thanks for the input. I went with a solid roller and raised to .135 and no scalping this morning. I have got to start top dressing more often, I have a small crew and need to start putting top dressing higher on the priority list. Will a light dusting done weekly be beneficial?

Absolutely! That is actually what is recommended. Some guys use #65 sand which is extremely fine so the mowers wont pick it up but we use #55 (slightly larger) with good results.
