We have one Salsco roller here and I am wondering how often it should be used. The course is currently closed, as it is under construction. Since rolling greens for speed is not necessary, would you see benefit in using this machine in our current situation. We just used the machine for the first time today. In my opinion, it improves ball roll, but does little to smooth some of the slightly uneven surfaces on the relatively new greens.

So I guess I'm just looking for some feedback from you guys. Should I continue to use it, or do you think it is better used as a tool for green speed only?

    Thanks,

How relatively new are the greens? If topdressed, are they mature enough to handle a dragging? Not to say I am an expert by any means, but on the greens construction and establishment I've done in my short career, we used a roller to aid in smoothening greens, but topdressing and a non-aggressive dragging will fill the undulations a bit more, allowing the plants to grow up to the level and smooth state desired for optimal ball roll. If you aren't open, you could do this quite frequently. If I recall out of memory, isn't there a brooming attachment for the Salsco as well. Two birds with one stone perhaps.

I roll with the Salsco 4x's per week, and mow 3x's under heavy growth regulation and virtually no Nitrogen,Tifeagle bermuda.

Just went through a renovation on 9 greens, rolling and topdressing every week after the sprigs were 2 weeks old. 4th week started lightly verticutting, first week 1 direction and 2 directions every week afterwards till opening. (opened in 9 weeks) Haven't verticut since opening but still topdressing occasionally and only used the light steel drag. Greens are sweet. Good Luck

We roll, everyday. I feel it allows me to keep my heights higher. Higher height of cut means more sleep!!
