I am getting asked why we do not roll greens(tif-eagle .120) on the weekends. We work 4 guys on the weekends and currently do the following: Mow greens, Change hole locations, bunkers, change water coolers, set up tees, blow tennis courts and at clubhouse, collect trash on course and at clubhouse. My answer is that we do not have the staff to add this to our schedule. We do roll greens during the week(typically 3-4 days) and weekends that we have events but bring in extra labor for those events. What do you guys do rolling and weekend schedule(Tasks and labor size)?

Can you fake them out and just roll, not mow? I know most of my players wouldn't know the difference.

    Justin,
We have a crew of 4-5 on the weekends and do the same tasks as you. Unless there is a member tourney I don't normally roll on the weekends.

I have the same size crew as you do on the weekends. We cut and roll on Saturdays and only roll on Sundays and they don't know the difference. Green speeds are the same and I have also told them that I do this to get feedback and they cannot tell a difference.

I've met with Superintendents all over the country that are skipping a mow on the weekends and rolling instead. Most don't even tell the golfers that they are skipping a mowing.

I've seen a lot of surveys that say most courses are rolling 3-4 days per week but I think that number is a little higher. I think it is closer to 5.

I would ask the membership if rolling is more important than raking bunkers. Rake bunkers on Saturday roll on Sunday.

We have gone to cutting cups and raking bunkers every other day and rolling every day.

Most of the problem is in a few golfers that have it stuck in their head that if greens are not rolled they are slow. Got great compliments on the greens this past weekend. Saturday we started mowing and had a monsoon come through before we got finished cutting and Sunday everything got cut. Go figure

during this heat and drought we have been rolling 9 greens and cutting nine greens everyday alternating front and back for the last 30 days. No complaints, the only thing that might give away which 9 got rolled or mowed would be if there is any debris on the greens that were rolled, so i send a guy around with a backpack blower in front of the roller. There may be an inconsistency in speed but very slim not enough for membership to notice anyway.
