I was wondering if anyone has tried spraying Primo right before snow fall to avoid crown hydration? In Southeastern Michigan we typically get a warm spell during the first part of the winter and was thinking that Primo may keep the plant from taking in water before a re-freeze to avoid or minimize winter damage.

There are anti-desiccants such as Leaf Shield that work great. I'm not sure Primo would do what you are hoping to achieve.

I've had the same thoughts, based on the 200 degree model the Primo is likely still doing its thing first thing in the spring but rather that would prevent early dormancy break is hard to say. I have applied it very late in the fall but never left a check to compare the difference. I might just do it this fall. I can only say that it did no harm.

I have also thought of anti-desiccants as an alternative as well. Glad you responded with that.

Dessication and crown hydration are two different animals.

As far as Primo helping with crown hydration its says in this link that it appears to help.

I realize there is a difference, one or the other or even both may help me reduce winter damage.

    Andy,

I've tried that over a couple falls in the last 5 years and still had damage anyway both times. Rates were .15 then .25/1000 I second Red in saying that it doesn't harm the grass, but it didn't seem to stop any hydration. It would be nice to find some magic spray that would protect everything all winter long until dormancy breaks.

I was talking to some Superintendents in Canada about this last month. Maybe it's not a concern, but what if you had turf damage over the winter? Dessication, ice damage, fungicide failure and break thru on snow mold application? Would a PGR inhibit recovery in the spring? If you were making the application just prior to dormancy would the residual remain stored in the plant and still stop cell elongation in the spring, there for delaying growth?

    Andrew-

I too am SE Michigan and the past two years have put down Primo on Greens and Fairways just before the snow falls. I have noticed a decrease in winterkill, but nothing extraordinary. I just do it primarily to manage growth after the last fungicide application. Good luck!
