I would like to eliminate the need to weedeat every couple weeks around our ponds. I am looking to find some kind of plant that flowers or is just nice to look at that I could grow around our pond banks. A combination of plants would be ideal but I dont know where to start... I am in SC.

    Thanks!

About 8 years back I had a Club President that wanted to plant areas around our lakebanks to make them look better (not plain). To be honest it ended up being a maintenance nightmare for us. the thought of not having to deal with weedeating the lakebanks since they are planted was bogus. we still had to weedeat around the plants and worse of all we had all types of weeds growing inside of the iris's that were planted. We tried several types of herbicides that were labled for spraying over the plants but they were generally not strong enough to kill the weeds (some of the weeds was torpedo grass). I eventually just cut them down. Since I used iris's they come back every spring and I will leave them be until after the bloom and then cut them back down. In my opinion, the banks look better without the plantings. But then again I have a very small crew and not much budget or time to deal with them.

I would be interested in seeing if anyone has a better way of managing them since they still return every year.

Check into Crown grass, Cordgrass, and Fakahatchee for on the bank. There are also several types of rushes and pickerelweed you could plant right inside the waters edge while still keeping the turf maintained.

Check out http://www.beemansnursery.com and look at their species list. You'll get the idea.

Would the plants along the waters edge survive the pond level rising for a couple of days?

True, true. If I could keep the weeds out, the weedeating to be done would at least be on level ground around the plants.

Absolutely. We have Crown and Cordgrass planted in the bottoms of some retention ponds and both do just fine.

7 ft. sickle mower for tractor works nice for me. mow around all ponds and ditches 3 or 4 times/year.
