Had a pipe break near a green that lifted the sod on the green like a water balloon and after it was all over left a lumpy putting surface. What are some ideas you all might have on a repair. Some of the hills and valleys are about 4 inches high. Covers about 2000 square feet of the green. Bent grass.

I have seen that repaired with a 10-ton roller. The one I saw had the flat cylinders front and back (no tires). It was done slow and dry so there was no slippage. It wasn't perfect, but it was not bad either.

Thanks for the reply. I do have access to a roller like that because this is a municipal golf course and public works has one they hardly ever use. Probably 5-8 tons. I thought it might sink into the green too much. Any other thoughts? What was the outcome that you saw? I really don't want to strip off the sod.

    Thanks,
    Brian

It happened to me years ago, I used a 1 ton double drum vibrating roller. I don't think I would go any bigger than that.

The one I saw was a Tifeagle green in South Florida. I don't recall the level of soil moisture when they rolled the green. I suppose this is something you could add to until you get the result you want.

We had same issue when a slip fix broke . Make sure you don't have any soil underneath now. We cut the sod and removed a 1" layer between the sand and sod. Our break was in the back of the green and the native soil washed downhill. Then we rolled it back smooth and top dressed.

Have had it happen and the best is to remove sod; level and resod. Takes time is all. Good Luck, Keith Zama Japan

The large roller with Vibrator works well. They are notorious hydrolic leakers so beware and check first on a hard surface.
