We are currently painting 2 golf courses in the north Atlanta area. We are content with our color and rate, but are looking for ways to improve upon the imperfections of the process. We made a trial run spraying the clean up pass with the spray hawk and using a boom sprayer to fill in the middle. This did a great job with giving us a clean crisp edge, but we ended up with a slightly darker edge than the middle. Also, is anyone else seeing slight streaking using the boom sprayer?

In Upstate of SC, tried it last year on a par 3...we sprayed twice to double the pattern with flat fans on HD200 sprayer, but we still saw streaking. I have heard that guys in the Myrtle Beach area are using the dual flat fan setup to help with uniformity. We also had trouble with the ceramic seal on the sprayer pump failing, but there is an oil seal from Napa that is a cheap, easy fix. We did convert back to the ceramic seal after we finished painting.

We are painting non over seeded tees and have had much better application with a hose reel and gun. The application is really pretty quick, and once the operator gets a good feel, you can blow through it fast. First application around November, then a touch up app in January.

    Good luck.

We used the middle boom only for the clean-up lap, then filled in as you're describing. The clean-up looked slightly darker after application, but seemed to fade to blend-in quickly. As far as the streaking, we used coarse droplet flat fan nozzles and slowed the ground speed to approx. 3 mph (1st gear with a Toro Multipro) and no noticeable streaking occurred.

Half rate, two directions, new nozzles. May want to consider upping your application volume by increasing tip size. Some guys have used the hollow cone or "Delavan" nozzles as well. Middle boom only for clean-up and only spray 3-9 or 4-10, 2-8 if going two directions. This way streaks won't be seen from the tees.

    Andy and Lydell,

What size nozzle are yall using? We are currently just using 11004 flat fans at 25 gal / A on the boom sprayer and 48 gallon / A on spray hawk. We have been told numerous times from the companies and salesmen that lower water volume is better.

We have also found that some moisture (mainly dew) will help with the streaking. This mainly applies to greens but it carries over on fairways as well.

We use 11006 at 40 GPM. I would think smaller nozzles have a high tendency to clog up.

Let me also say we are also using pigments with this set-up, but have successfully also applied paints.
