One my greens at Bridges has not overwintered well to say the least. Green is 14 years old and 75% dead with large sections with no life in it whatsoever. I am about to Graden it lightly in 2 directions, seed it, solid mini-tine the heck out of it and then topdress, fert and cover it. I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or advice bringing it back.

That should do it. Seed to soil contact is key. Obviously moisture is critical. I've seen the seedlings come out and then stall when relying to heavily on irrigation water. Very frustrating, a good timely rain will push them along again!

    Good luck!!!

Thanks Andrew, do you see any benefit going with a larger tine?

Personally I would solid tine prior to seeding. Of course it would be interesting to seed 1/2 the green prior to and 1/2 the after aerifying to see if there is a variance in results.

I agree with Clay on aerifying before seeding. As far as holes, in the past I have gone with a 3/8 tine on very clode spacing. The more holes the better.

My process when I did it in the past, verticut x2, aerify (I pulled cores because I could), seed, topdress, brush everything in (making sure to keep it all on green), fertilize, water. I went in a day or 2 later with hand spikers and spiked even more seed into the green (I was seeding areas in greens with 30% loss)

I had awesome germination in all the aerification holes (great seed to soil contact and protected from play and mowers). Good luck!!

i have also had a lot of success with cutting the solid tines in half and only having them dimple the surface. i always like get a good pythium preventative out once the seedlings start to come up. although your climate may be a little different than i have in the southeast. will the green still be in play while you are trying to get this done?

We have had great results overseeding with A4 & 007 using the overseed atachtment on the graden , Used the graden alone in one pass scarify, seed and sand all in one go. We got the seed in the slits at the correct level ca 2mm below surface covered wit sand brushed in within 7 days had the seed germinated. Can save time and man labour with exellent results.

Thanks for all the great advice guys. In the end ownership did not want me chewing the green up so it's been a barrage of plugging and sod patches. Not to mention keeping the green near death with nitrogen to fill in. Green is close to being back to normal but sure would have liked to try and get some of the new bents into the green.

we have been trying all season to re-grow our collars and some greens... We solid tined, topdressed, and overseeded. then we slit seeded with a ryan mataway. then we demo'ed a spiker/aerator from greens groomer and worked fabulously!!! tired sr1150/chewings, penncross, and will be doing more sr1150... also tried hand overseeder from miltona, that seems to work decently.
